Tutoring review by Youngsoo in Gresham, OR
The student tried to work on some of the problems on his own before the session, so I had him explain his problem-solving process to me for the problems he already started on. I was more interested in understanding what mental tools he uses and what goes on in his mind as he's working on difficult problems. He is getting a little better at re-reading the problems for understanding, whereas before he would just skim through it once. I am trying to teach him to be more independent. I want him to be confident and accurate in doing the work on his own. I asked him what were the most important things to focus on when doing harder problems, and he said to "slow down, and write it out." I challenged him and actually told him to go as fast as we wants and not re-check it work. He seemed confused by this and said that "you're supposed to check over things to make sure it's right." So I told him that when working through these problems, to only do what he thinks will help him solve it (so he can work according to his natural strengths). I showed him that when he writes things down on paper, he can solve things nearly 100% with little help because he has information to reference to. But when he tries to do it all in his head, he gets confused and can't solve it. This made sense to him and he was able to see based on his experience how writing things out made him better. I think this will make him more willing to want to do this on his own.

The student and I went over the rest of his multiplication facts and started on some of his division facts. We will be doing more logic problems when we next meet.

The student and I went through her homework, which covered solving and simplifying equations that involved exponents, radicals, and factoring. She was doing really well and I noticed that she makes less of those small mistakes. Overall, it was a good session and I may be seeing her again on Wednesday to review her upcoming exam on Friday.

We reviewed for the second half of the student's final, going over linear inequalities, exponential functions, quadratic functions, and polynomials. She needed a bit of review on some arithmetic rules (in particular rule for exponents) but otherwise did well with the material.

Today we drilled for the math and verbal sections. Both students are doing very well with the practice questions. I left extra verbal practice.

The student has a Geometry test tomorrow that deals with Euclidean proofs (geometric and algebraic) as well as Boolean logic, and inductive and deductive reasoning. We used this time to go over his notes and make sure that he had a solid understanding of the material. Since he got a 27/26 on his last quiz, I'd like to say he does. Once he gets his grades back from this test, we'll be able to adequately note his progress. He really is an excellent student.
