Tutoring review by Amanda in Prospect Park, PA
The student is doing really well with the Pythagorean theorem. I had her do some complicated word problems and draw pictures to help her figure out the problems, and she did very well! We also worked on coordinate plotting and translations and reflections. She has a quiz on Thursday.

The student had an excellent level of focus as we finished up our discussion of algebra 2 today. We completed two new topics: domain and range and completing the square. He and I then took a comprehensive algebra 1 final and he got most of the problems correct. He struggled a bit on factoring by grouping, something we have worked on a few times before. He knows how to do it, he just needs to practice it more so that he can repeat the method flawlessly.

The student and I continued work on the math section of the SAT exam this week. Last week we made some progress with both refreshing him on the math concepts covered on the SAT, and helping him with test taking strategies. In the case of math, especially out of the three sections, the challenge for the student will be two-fold: his math knowledge has faded over time, since he is in college now, and he struggles with test anxiety and time management. For three hours I drilled him in timed, 10-question increments. In general he's looking at a 450-500 math score right now, and I'm trying to pick battles with him by focusing less on the most challenging problems, and more on not leaving easier problems on the table.

Tutoring review by Rachel in Prospect Park, PA
The student and I used this session to study for her upcoming quiz in AP NSL and discuss her studying strategies for this course as well. Her teacher had assigned "concept cards," which were basically extensive flashcards of important vocabulary throughout her reading assignments. Having these longer reading assignments was new to her. We worked together on looking for the words in context to decipher their meaning as well as using the tools in the book (i.e. index and glossary) to help us figure them out. I then used the concept cards to quiz her on the material, and she did a great job of remembering not only the definition of the vocab but also the broader use of the words in a historical context.

Tutoring review by Emily in Prospect Park, PA
We assessed the student's trouble spots, breaking down the questions she answered incorrectly by type (recall, application, or analysis). Next time, she will take the test again and see how much better she can score given our review time.

Tutoring review by Garrett in Prospect Park, PA
The student and I discussed his performance on a recent pop quiz, on which he did very well compared to his classmates. We worked some practice problems similar to those he missed, which included inequalities involving absolute value and setting up algebraic equations. We then worked on factoring polynomials and transformations of graphs.
