Tutoring review by Anna in Dunedin, FL
We spent our time reviewing how to solve systems of equations. We worked on writing out a method to solve these problems and then actually practicing them.

We discussed what to cover for the remainder of the year which is all topics in preparation for the end of year comprehensive exam. I have a written list of all topics and we did a review of limits and continuity, of which the student has a fairly good grasp. We then looked at tangent and secant lines but the problems in the text book are not very good as practice items. I have a set of AP Exam practice problems so we worked through these as they are much better problems and cover all listed topics. I think we will use this format of working practice problem sets which cover all topics and is better for reviewing previously covered material. Next session, I've asked the student to complete the practice problem set. We did Q1-15 and the student is to complete Q16-24.

We went over the feminism essay that the student finished reading for homework. He seemed to have far less difficulty with it than he did at the beginning; he had grown more accustomed to the dense academic language, which was a good sign. He was able to pinpoint the main ideas of chunks of the essay. After finishing, we went back to his initial questions/thoughts about the essay and compared them with what he'd learned. We then began reading our next essay on feminism, Kimmel's "What About the Boys?" The student's homework is to finish it on his own.

Tutoring review by Caroline in Dunedin, FL
The student and I worked primarily on multiplication facts today, alternating between games online and traditional fill-in-the-blank sheets. We continued to go over strategies like working from an answer you know, or the always-helpful nines trick. We took the last half an hour to start on a book just for fun, where she read a page and I read a page. We picked out some good vocab words to go over, but overall this was meant to keep her in the groove of reading, in a manner that she will enjoy. She was focused and ready to work the entire session, and made noticeable progress in her multiplications facts!

Yesterday the student and I worked on some more pre-algebra problems. We mainly covered combining like terms and the distributive property (the material was the same, even though he just took a test on it on Tuesday). We also worked on Spanish vocabulary in preparation for his Spanish test. He did very well with everything. He maintained a positive attitude throughout the session. In terms of strategies or study skills, I let him know to focus on creating a common denominator for different terms. I left him with a few problems where he has to solve for X that was in a fraction.

The student wanted a quick study session before her physics test tomorrow. She just went over questions that we'd done before to make sure she understood them adequately. If she slows down and doesn't doubt herself, I know she can excel. I wish her good luck on her test, and I look forward to working with her again!
