Today we started Chapter 2 and began the lesson by going over some of the student's writing for the exercises. His writing has really improved and most of the mistakes are minor. We then spent some time on phrases, specifically with different prepositions, and their meanings. I think this was very helpful as these are common phrases with a multitude of uses. We wrapped up the lesson by going over more of his writing for some of the exercises, and again he did a great job. The book seems to be very helpful in addressing different areas to work on through relevant exercises.

Today we went over a reading assessment. My student did well with context clues but could use more support with identifying the main theme of passages. We then talked about the 5 paragraph essay. He had never written a 5 paragraph essay, so we discussed what that format is and then I walked him through the writing of a 5 paragraph essay complete with introductory paragraph, thesis, supporting sentences, supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion. He did a great job.

Today, the student and I did two problems of proofs and an additional problem that I selected. She has exams tomorrow, Wednesday, and Thursday. I told her to email me any questions she has. She is done with her first quarter this Friday.

Both students finished the last two parts of a practice SSAT. They both scored in the mid to upper 600s on all parts of the exam. After we completed the SSAT verbal and quantitative portions, the boys answered interview questions pertaining to the school to which they are applying. Both boys were given flashcards to study between sessions before they take the SSAT.

1. We covered separation of variables for ODEs as well as exponential growth models for bacteria.
2. The student did very well on the problems we covered today. Once he sees how something works, you don't have to tell him twice.
3. I tried to hammer home on the small conceptual struggles he has.
4. We finished one worksheet.
5. He has tests on Wednesday and Friday, so hopefully all goes well!
6. He is an incredibly smart student. It is fun to tutor him since he understands things so quickly.
