For the first 20 minutes we worked on reviewing the student's homework. His homework was on bar graphs. He did not remember working on them in class so we went over the uses and the parts of a bar graph before completing the assignment. For the remainder of the session, we worked on multiplication. I taught him when he encounters a multiplication problem that he doesn't know automatically, instead of adding together all of the numbers, to start from the closest problem he knows and add or subtract to get to the answer (e.g., he doesn't know 8x7 but we worked from 8x8 so he could arrive at the answer quickly). He is making progress in his ability to solve his multiplication problems quicker.

I assisted the student with his math (adding and subtracting negative numbers), and helped him on his math project. I also quizzed him on his vocabulary, both for language arts and for science. He sometimes struggled with his math, but I gave him more practice problems until he felt comfortable with the concept. He did a good job today.

Today the student worked on her homework (which she had already started), which dealt with finding the area of composite shapes. When we started she uncertain about some things, but by the time we finished she seemed much more confident and understood the use of the formulas for rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids. She also informed me she had received a 100% on her last math test! I'm very proud of how hard she is working, and I'm glad her efforts are paying off.

The student and I practiced reading from a hundreds list to help her to help her practice recognizing sight words. She is now on list six out of seven. We also practiced her oral fluency by having her complete three timed readings in one minute. Her average was about 70 words correct per minute. We reviewed her goal of 111 words correct per minute. We also played a variety of multiplication card games to help with her multiplication fluency.

The student and I reviewed some multiple-step math problems. At first she was confused on how to approach them, but I helped break it down for her, and she picked it up! After finishing her homework, I created some additional problems to continue practice. We also did some speed tests for multiplication to try to get her to not use her hands to count (teacher request). We are going to have to keep working on the speed, but she is very good at figuring it out!
