Tutoring review by Katie in Moorpark, CA
During this session, we reviewed examples of how to solve multi-step equations. After doing several problems together, I asked the student to talk through the process and her reasoning as she was working the problems. She definitely understand the process of how to solve the problems; she was simply making small mistakes when it came to integer operations. Seeing this, I helped to remind her about integer operations rules, then we did a few integer operation drills to check her understanding. Next, we worked on her characterization assignment related to "The Most Dangerous Game." After reviewing the notes from class, she was able to identify examples of characterization in the story and explain them well. I left her with a list of items to do for next time.

Client is a very strong math student. She knows her math facts, rules for computing integers, and is very organized when carrying out a multi-step problem (order of operations and evaluating expressions.) She showed me a test that she just received back. She earned an A and we reviewed the problems she missed points on. She mostly knew all the content, just corrected a few errors (incorrect sign when adding two negatives.) I would like to work with her regarding solving algebraic expressions by isolating the variable. She used logic to help her solve a problem x*(-1)=3 (first used whole numbers 1*3= 3, then used rules for integers a negative times a negative = a positive number. X=(-3). She gave me her textbook log information so I can see what she is working on in class. She also showed me her teacher's webpage. I will email her and ask to email me with any concerns that she has with the student's math. She was emailed a practice test of 12 questions to complete that focused on order of operations, evaluating expressions and solving problems involving integers.

We went over solving system of equations with two variables. I introduced her to the substitution and elimination method. I modeled how to do the problem and she did a few practice problems. She verbalized the difference between them and was able to determine which method would be easier to solve with based on the problem. She did well, however, she needs to pay attention to her signs and watch for errors. I have developed a checklist for her that I will introduce at our next session.

Today, the student did several online Critical Reading practices modules. The modules were timed at 10 minutes each. In the first two, she practiced identifying the types of questions that are challenging for her by recognizing the language in the question itself. Then, she completed modules for time, prioritizing answering the questions that were easiest for her and then attempting the more challenging ones. Again, she struggled with inference questions and completing the sections within the allotted time, so we focused on those questions specifically and reviewed additional time saving strategies such as annotating key ideas to avoid having to return to the text frequently when answering questions, and how to quickly identify the information needed when directed to particular line #'s.

Today we reviewed the parts of the head and other previous vocabulary words as well as the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. We spent the rest of the lesson conjugating hablar, a regular "ar" verb, and what the subjects are to conjugate verbs. For next week, the student is to have hablar' conjugations memorized.
