Recent Independence Tutoring Session Notes
Starting today, our sessions will be to cover different practice sessions from the books that the student has. I identified a problem with generating equations from word problems as we went along with the practice sections. I have left for her problems related to functions and other kinds of word problems to do so that she can get practice. I have asked for her to show any kind of work that she might think will lead her to the answer. In that way, I can tell her where she is wrong and guide her to the right answers using the desired methods.

We started work on physics, doing material covering free fall, where the student was very comfortable with the material and already knew exactly what she was doing. Then we went over chemistry, starting with electromagnetic radiation (frequency, wavelength, and energy), then we went over the Bohr & Quantum Mechanical models of the atom, including Pauli Exclusion Principle and Hund's Rule. We related the topics by discussing how excited electrons jump orbitals and release energy as light when returning to their normal orbital.

The student reviewed for her upcoming precalculus final, reviewing graphing trigonometric functions and their transformations, graphing quadratic and linear functions, solving logarithmic functions, graphing exponential functions with base e, boundedness, end behavior, graphing polynomials, the rational zeros test, finding rational zeros of a polynomial function, linear factorization, determining vertical and horizontal asymptotes and finding the slant asymptote by long division and synthetic division, end behavior, and transformations of functions, vertical stretches and shifts, and continuing interest formula.

The students got back into the swing of things at this session after a couple weeks off by doing some activities involving reading comprehension and parts of speech. We spent most of the sessions refreshing them on what we had worked on for the last couple months so that we can move on to build upon that knowledge this semester. The boys also set academic and tutoring goals for the new year.

During our session, the student and I reviewed Darwin's theory of evolution. We were able to cover natural selection and the principles found within the topic. We also discussed fitness and how various insects and animals adapt over time.
She had a very good understanding of evolutionary concepts and was able to provide practical examples as we reviewed the chapter. She had a positive attitude and commented on how interesting she found the material.
Overall, I thought we had a good and productive session. She was prepared, which allowed us to review both her in class assignment and homework.
