Tutoring review by Christopher in Kansas
The student was still having a little trouble with the use of functional notation, but I think we've taken care of that from today onward. We did an in-depth study of some procedures involving fractions, including involving addition of rational polynomial expressions. This gave us an opportunity to review several topics from earlier lessons, such as factoring polynomials. He says he's working on the online course, but he's concerned about whether he'll stay motivated to work on the worksheets. He came up with a list of things to practice during the week and asked me to keep him accountable and make sure he was on track with his assignments at future meetings. I promised to follow up via email him during the week to check in. We also had a very nice conversation about politics afterwards.

Rules of derivatives: We covered rules for the trig functions sin and cos. These rules were also used in finding derivatives of polynomials with both power and trig functions. We also covered some use of the chain rule for trig functions.

We spent half of our time on Algebra and half on Government. In government, we reviewed the powers of the executive branch and how they interact with the other branches of government. We drew out a chart to represent the separation of powers and how each branch can influence the others. In algebra, we did a brief review of the last concept, and then went on to graph a system of equations so that she can understand how it operates visually before we solve the same problem with equations on Tuesday. Overall, she is a really great kid, and I really enjoyed our session!

Tested the levels of math that each of the children are at. Student 1 is still working on getting comfortable with addition and subtraction, so we'll be working on fluency with those. Student 2 is clearly comfortable with those two, and is getting some familiarity with multiplication and division, which I'll be pushing with him.

The student and I continued to work through his pre-calc review. We looked at rules of exponents, rules of logarithms, solving trigonometric equations, and solving a multivariable statement for a given variable. He and I are going to work together again tomorrow. We are going to prove the rules of logarithms as well to aid in their understanding.

The student and I worked on her homework for the week. Since she is a bright girl, she only needed help with a few problems. We worked through strategies for balancing chemical equations and calculating percent yield. With the extra time, we read through her first lab and corrected some of her analysis methods that were jotted in the notebook.
