Tutoring review by Julia in Galeville, NY
The student completed the last 20 questions on his Unit 8 Midterm Checkpoint Test, finishing the assessment with 100% correct answers. He needed help solving algebraic equations in the form of questions and review. He knows how to solve formulas after looking up the form in his notes. He also shows exceptional reasoning ability and understands the word problems. He has learned many new terms including reciprocal, inverse operations, like terms, absolute value, area and perimeter. He has a firm grasp on perimeter but still gets confused about area when he starts the problem. The strategies of drawing and labeling figures and diagrams was used. After a break he started Unit 9 on Probability. The term "probability" was presented in lay terms as the chance that something will or won't happen. It was noted that probability can be expressed as a rational number (fraction, decimal or percent) between 0 and 1. He experienced thinking about coins, dice, spinners and bags of marbles, etc. He firmly understands the concept of probability and how to make a fraction from the math story. Further, he has strong prior knowledge of vocabulary words such as "certain." The real world connections and strong understanding of the concepts made the lesson on probability fun for he. He is making excellent progress.

Tutoring review by Greg in Galeville, NY
The student only had one new homework assignment since our last session. It was a worksheet on exponents that introduced negative exponents. He had already done a few of the problems already in class. We reviewed the problems together and corrected a few simple mistakes. This is about the last topic in the chapter, so I found some review problems in the textbook for the student to do. He had forgotten a couple of the concepts, such as dividing with exponents. We finished the problems, and I gave a short summary of exponents discussion in which I explicitly talked about exponents and the rules associated with them. We had a little time left at the end, so the student asked me to review his physics homework with him.

Today we worked on practicing vocabulary words (diffusion, transport, hyper/hypo/isotonic, etc.) and the concepts that go with them. We made great progress! The student was initially confused about the concepts, but she picked them up very quickly and was able to easily solve and even write some of her own practice problems.

The student and I continued going over the topics she missed from class the previous week. We prepared for a quiz that would cover obtaining factors of polynomial functions as well as the rational root theorem. Once I explained how to approach the problem and the steps to take, she felt more comfortable working through the homework.

In today's session, the student completed problem set 57 for homework next week as well as test corrections and review for Test 6 in math. I have emailed his teacher and he is set to retake Test 6 on Monday after school. With this test, many of the points he lost were due to little errors and lack of attention to detail. We are working very hard on this together and will continue to do so throughout the rest of the school year.
