Tutoring review by Christopher in Henrico County, VA
We went over the first test on her state assessment review book. We went over a slew of topics from factoring to percentiles. The student could use some more practice when it comes to finding the roots/ solutions/ zeros of a polynomial. The fundamentals keep escaping her. I recommended her to please go over the second test for further practice on topics I felt she could really use help on. I also told her to email me during the week so I can prepare a concise summary sheet of the topics that she needs help on. With all that said, she did give her best effort in understanding the material. We practiced a few problems several times and by the end of the session I saw an improvement.

We started looking through the review packet for the student's geometry final to see which topics to focus on. We went through the equation sheets to review what the different variables are and when to use different forms of the equations. We looked at the equations for all four types of conic sections and how to sketch the graphs of ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas. We were able to identify how the different constants in an equation affect the graph by shifting the center of the graph or scaling the radius. We looked at using the perfect square method of factoring a polynomial to rewrite an equation into the conic form in order to be able to find the center/vertex and other key constants for sketching the graph. Lastly, we reviewed circles and finding arc length, the area of a sector, and converting between degrees and radians. She is doing well identifying which equation to use for finding arclength and area of a sector as well as using arclengths to find various interior and exterior angles for a particular circle. We also talked about easy ways to determine if an angle is given in radians or degrees. In addition to what they work on for review in class and before our next session, she is planning on working through many of the problems in the review packet for the topics that we covered today to see how comfortable she is with these concepts before we focus on the rest of the topics.

Tutoring review by Brittaney in Henrico County, VA
The student was interested in practicing a presentation and improving how to present it to a Chinese investor audience (citizens of PRC). We discussed pacing, organization, tone, Chinese cultural norms, and English words in the presentation that would better translate to a deck in Mandarin Chinese.

The topics we covered today included working with fractions -- finding common denominators, adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying and dividing fractions, changing mixed numbers into fractions, and reducing fractions. The material is sometimes challenging for the student, but he continues to practice each type of problem until he feels comfortable with each.

Tonight the student and I hit Logical Reasoning hard again, after a disappointing showing on a recent practice exam. In the main, his problems are with argument family questions and identifying conclusions. Going forward, he's got to start every question by identifying the conclusion. Before our next lesson, he's going to be working independently in his book and keeping a list of topics to discuss.

The student and I went over the concept of factoring--how to factor, why factoring is useful, and when to factor. We also covered the mechanics of reducing radicals (roots) and how to treat them. At the beginning of the session, she said she didn't understand at all, but at the end of the session, she was able to complete every one of the problems I gave her and seemed much more confident with the material.
