We went over free-response questions from multiple AP exams. The questions were advanced enough to be useful to the student.

Tutoring review by Julie in Paradise Valley, AZ
Today I started the session by having the student do multiplication and division practice problems in a workbook. I showed her different ways to come up with the answer when she was stuck. I also worked with her in a language arts workbook where she had to read a sentence and then circle the best meaning. After we spent some time with a few of those problems, I then let her continue reading the book she picked out and then continued to write in her journal answering comprehension questions. It seems as though she needs a lot of repetition, and therefore today we worked mainly on the 3 and 4 times table. I will work with her on those for a while before switching to 5 and 6 times tables. The reading goal I have for her is to continue working on comprehension skills. Her fluency and decoding skills will be practiced as well, but I think the main focus for her needs to be comprehension.

We worked on percents. One area I have noticed the student needs improvement on his her ability to manipulate fractions. I think the percents and proportions unit has really helped her with this. Next session we are having a 2 hour meeting. I plan on using the time to really focus in on her high school entrance test and use what she has learned so far to improve her score.

Tutoring review by Ryan in Paradise Valley, AZ
In our second to last session we went over a combination of math and writing sections and quickly were able to confirm that in these areas the student had improved past the goal she was aiming for on her next test. We then pivoted to the reading section, especially the longer passages and the two opposing author sections.

Tutoring review by Bert in Paradise Valley, AZ
I reviewed how to solve math questions that included an unknown or unusual symbol, such as those involving diamond, square or other shapes. For these problems, I told the student to treat the problem like a substitution type problem - before solving what the question asks for, he needs to convert the "weird" shaped/symbol into "real" math by using the given definition of the shape. Because he still struggled with that conceptually, I explained to him that he should maybe treat it as an analogy problem - if given A * B = 2A + B for example, and he was given 2*5, he should think of it as 2 is to A and 5 is to B to figure out what 2*5 equals. This way of thinking about the problem seemed a little better for him. As a last minute review, I reiterated the basics of converting English to an equivalent math expression, as his biggest issue seems to be trying to solve the problem intuitively instead of algebraically, leading him to a lot of incorrect mental math. For further review, I linked him to the test prep site for additional practice on solving algebraic related problems.

Tutoring review by Landon in Paradise Valley, AZ
We went over the student's test that she did ok on (same as class average). We redid the problems she missed to figure out where she made mistakes. We discussed patterns of how her teacher asks questions on the test. We also discussed critical points, an important part of the next sections of material.
