Recent Greenville Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I specifically covered her recent quiz on solving equations with radicals/rational exponents, as well as a review for the entire chapter that she is about to be tested on. We looked at properties for combining and simplifying rational exponents as well as best orders for doing so. Her biggest struggle was in understanding how to go about simplifying radicals, and then specifically rewriting terms in an appropriate/standard order. We took the time to really look at it and let her work through a few examples and she eventually came to her own understanding of how to do it correctly - big triumph! At the end of the session we reviewed the problem solving skills we practiced when going over the quiz at the beginning, and she showed noticeable improvement in her approach. I left her with the homework that she should work on memorizing the squares of 2-9, cubes of 2-5, and fourths of 2 and 3 since these are commonly occurring and speed up the work significantly when you know them. She seemed in good spirits by the end!

The student and I went over specific problems from class. With the AP exam coming up, the solidification of concepts is needed. She is still very enthusiastic and ready to learn every session. For next time, we will be doing more AP problems for more practice.

I assisted the student with his geometry review. We went over parts of circles, triangle similarities, and different geometry formulas. He is almost done with his geometry review, which he is planning on finishing tomorrow.

The student started with a timed session of 12 problems in a minute. We reviewed addition and subtraction fact families. I showed her how to use the multiplication chart when she got stumped, and how you count from one section to the next. We did four multiplication fact wheels. We worked on the 11 facts, 10 facts, and we ended with the 7 facts.

The student is doing a good job at understanding the concepts during the tutoring session. Today, we went over the present subjunctive along with going over vocabulary from previous weeks. We learned the difference between when to use the present progressive and when to use the present subjunctive. The subjunctive is used when expressing desires, emotions or influence. As always, the student took pictures of the textbook to go over.
