Tutoring review by Gabriel in New Berlin, WI
Since he has a chapter test coming up, we decided to review chapter 6 in preparation for his test. The first section was pretty straightforward. We went over simple differential equations, solved them, and used slope fields in order to graph functions given an initial condition. After going over a couple of textbook problems, we moved on to integration and looked at how we can find the integral of given functions, making sure that our rules still applied, and I explained how they are the exact inverse of derivatives. I went over the integral of the power rule as an example and explained how he can be sure his integral is correct by taking the derivative of his result and making sure his result and the initial problem agree. We went over some problems dealing with a wide range of integration techniques and functions. He answered them well, but he still had a couple of small mistakes that I quickly pointed out and fixed. Then we went over integration by parts, a strong technique in integration which is used to simplify an integral. We worked on a couple of problems and went over some neat tricks when given two periodic functions as part of the integrand.

The student told me that he received a 9/10 on his quiz on factoring this past week. This was such an encouragement, since he had considered factoring his worst nemesis in algebra. We continued with our review today--radicals! We went through the packet that involved radical equations, covering simplifying radicals and solving radical equations. There's been tremendous improvement on his part--seeing him be extra careful to not miss signs, fractions, etc., has demonstrated to me that he has immensely improved his attention to detail, thus being able to avoid minute errors! Overall a great session.

We worked on more factoring problems. We talked about how to simplify polynomials to their fullest extent. We also talked about using factoring to solve equations for x. If the problems are factored correctly, this solves the equation quickly. We talked briefly about unit conversions. The student is going to work on some review test for systems of equations and factoring, that we will talk more about next time.

We went through another multiple-choice quiz, some questions of which had ambiguous answers. We worked through and tested JavaScript, jQuery, CSS, and other areas of knowledge to come up with the best possible answers.
