Recent New Brunswick Tutoring Session Notes
The student and I covered maps and how to interpret topographic maps. We went through several maps and analyzed several aspects of the map such as depth, elevation, borders, etc. We also worked on how to use the scale provided on the map and a piece of paper to calculate the distance (actual distance) between two points on a map that is drawn to illustrate. The student felt confident in her ability to use and analyze maps after this session.

The student and I began reading the Book of Virtues and developed a note taking strategy for the stories in the book. We also reviewed parts of speech and parts of the sentence.

We worked on the first chapter in algebra which was focused on adding subtracting dividing and multiplying integers. Concepts like integers, absolute values and number lines were defined. I corrected her homework and explained any questions she did not understand, We took the online test that comes with the book and she seems to be understanding the information pretty well. We will resume with 2 hour sessions on Thursday.

The student and I reviewed the questions in detail that he completed for his homework. After that, we spent an hour reviewing two specific strategies given in his book (LCM and using choices to solve problems quicker during test time).

The student and I worked through two sections of her SAT math prep book. She did very well on most of her sections where she completed the answer. She got 23 out of 24 right and I was really happy to see she made some good progress. She has two more sections of math that she's going to work through.

We did practice problems in all three SAT sections to determine what areas to focus on first. Vocabulary for sentence completions, critical reading strategies review, and grammar rule review will be the primary areas. Homework consists of memorizing 25 high frequency vocab words, purchasing a number of prep books, and doing a practice reading and writing section by Sunday's meeting.
