Tutoring review by Jennifer in Cheektowaga, NY
I worked with the student on his math homework. Their current unit is plotting in Cartesian coordinates and finding equations of lines, mainly finding the slopes. He had a good bit of difficulty with some of the basics of this concept, including switching his x- and y- coordinates when plotting. He understood which was which, but didn't think before plotting. He also struggled with understanding slope in general-- specifically with the concept of rise = change in y, run = change in x. When given two points, he was unsure about how to continue to actually find the slope. When given a slope, he had difficulty plotting points. He also still struggles with addition and subtraction of negative numbers. After we completed his homework review, we spent some extra time going over a prior quiz on slopes and line equations that he had struggled with. We went over every point he got off and did some extra examples on the side, and he proved to me that he understood what he had done wrong.

We talked about graphing basic rational functions by finding their important characteristics, such as the domain, range, x-intercepts, y-intercepts, horizontal asymptotes, vertical asymptotes, and general shape. The most challenging part was determining the basic shape once all of the other information had been determined. Often, it involves testing multiple points, or it can involve testing to see whether the function as a whole is positive or negative by examining the product of its factors. The important thing is to be sure to check your results, because different graphs can have widely disparate shapes.

The student had a worksheet over graphing sine and cosine waves. He essentially knew how to do the whole sheet (period, amplitude, phase shift, vertical shift). For the most part, he's good with this. Tangent graphs are coming up, so I showed him how y=tan(x) looks. He generated the table of values from x=0 to pi using unit circle angles. He then plotted the points, realizing that tan(pi/2) is undefined and therefore would produce an asymptote. I left him with a quick discussion of the cotangent graph. He caught on very quickly to the similarities and difference between tan and cot.

The student practiced several problems involving percents, including discount, mark-up, commission, taxes, and tips. The student enjoys trying to figure out the solution in his mind before working out the computation using pencil and paper. We also worked out some questions involving changes of state due to temperature change and understanding sublimation.

We reviewed fractions. We covered subtracting mixed numbers, multiplying fractions with cross canceling, and finding the prime factorization of numbers. At the end, we took 10 minutes to fit a pentominoes puzzle.

The student and I discussed his Religious written assignment. He had to write three separate articles on the Pope's visit to the United States. We went through each piece and edited for content and clarity. I also advised him that he can email me written works before they were are even if we don't meet on that particular day. This will allow us to slowly refine his writing to make it the best it can be.
