We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

In this session, the student and I first focused on physics. He was studying for a test tomorrow, and we worked on F=ma and Newton's laws as well as the principles of vector addition and unit conversion. After an hour, we worked on the student's geometry homework, focusing on proofs involving triangle congruency.

The student and I went over some vocabulary from the high-frequency word list.  We also corrected the writing errors from her diagnostic test and worked through the general math examples and some of the practice problems.

The student and I went over some Pre-Calculus work.  She received an 86% on her last exam, which was good.  I still think she can do better, but she is doing much better than when we started. I am very excited about her progress.

Tutoring review by Stacey in White Plains, NY
I met the student for the first time on Sunday. She is very intelligent and I was impressed with the amount of her novel she had comprehended. She was able to give me a detailed summary of the  characters, motives and ethical issues raised by the novel. We worked on study skills and how to best comment on a text. Then we worked on essay writing, creating a thesis and topic sentences from which she is to write a practice essay. Next meeting we will work on comprehension of a Shakespeare text that she will encounter later this year, discuss the second novel assigned for summer reading, and discuss time management techniques. She seems like a focused student who is committed to improving.

Tutoring review by Meredith in White Plains, NY
The student had one chapter to read for her Wednesday class, which is Anthropology.  We read the chapter together and she took notes on the key points and important terms.  Because the student is now worried about the level of difficulty of the tests in this class, we stopped to discuss and summarize the material at the end of each section. I also encouraged her to speak with her professor after class, to see if she has any tips how to better retain the material.  I think it is important for the student to be proactive and identify herself to her professors early on as a student who does keep up with the readings and is willing to ask for extra assistance.  This will hopefully motivate her to stay on top of the material, and will make her feel more comfortable speaking with her professors if she does run into trouble.
