Engineering Tutoring FAQ
The discipline of engineering requires students to take stock of a problematic real-world situation, represent it using quantitative calculations, and use the results of these calculations. In order to do this successfully, you will be required to use some creativity and critical thinking skills to design the most efficient, sensible answer to the problem presented. Given the wide variety of skills that engineering students are expected to draw upon when designing a solution to a problem, it can be difficult to diagnose exactly where a student is struggling when he or she cannot come up with an effective solution. Similarly, the field of engineering is divided into many subfields, and resources that can help a student gain the knowledge he or she needs to succeed in chemical engineering, for example, may have nothing to do with the material a budding civil engineer needs to learn.
Engineering tutoring is rooted in developing a client's problem-solving skills and critical-thinking abilities within the context of their existing engineering coursework and experience. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with engineering tutors who are knowledgeable in every major engineering discipline, including biomedical engineering, environmental engineering, chemical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and aerospace engineering. Not only are these engineering tutors well versed in the topics they tutor, they are also excellent communicators who have made it through a rigorous selection process.
Tutors work with clients to make each tutoring session as effective and efficient as possible. They are flexible with what material is covered in each session, and are capable of working with multiple teaching techniques. By establishing a working rapport with a private engineering tutor, he or she will be able to gain insight into what your strengths, weaknesses, and preferred learning styles are. With this information in mind, your tutor can develop a completely customized lesson plan that is best suited for your needs and learning preferences. Moreover, a tutor can help you work through challenging homework problem sets, review for upcoming midterm and final exams, go over material covered since the previous tutoring session, or talk through difficult concepts and problem-solving strategies. In addition, consistent tutoring stresses an ongoing development of problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, as these are both crucial components that ensure your success in all your engineering coursework and majors.
By choosing a dedicated and professional tutor, you are able to study with someone who is committed to helping you choose a deeper understanding of your course content. Whether you need to review older material that has already been covered in previous lessons, or you need help making sense of newly introduced concepts and theories, Varsity Tutors can help you find the right person to help you through your academic struggles. There are a number of difficult concepts to grasp in various engineering fields, and not understanding a key component or theory can be to your detriment. Because of the nature of classroom lectures, instructors and professors rarely have the time to give detailed explanations. Fortunately, tutors are skilled in explaining and simplifying challenging concepts in a manner that you can both understand and apply in a real-world context.
A key benefit of working with a tutor is that he or she will work to make the tutoring experience as convenient as possible. You can schedule one-on-one engineering tutoring sessions at any time, and meetings can take place as often as needed. Furthermore, tutors are very flexible in meeting clients at whatever location is most convenient, including coffee shops, in the client's home, in libraries, on college campuses, and even online. Contact a Varsity Tutors director today to learn more about how we can help you find a dedicated tutor so that you can begin an engineering tutoring program!

Recent Engineering Tutoring Session Notes
In this first session, we mainly covered DNA/RNA transcription and translation, as well as some basic genetics topics (dominance/co-dominance/hybrid vigor). The student seemed to develop a better grasp of the material as we went along, and we will certainly review at our next meeting.
The student and I worked through her Biology and Geometry. In Geometry, she is working on trigonometry to solve unknown sides and angles in a triangle. She has a great understanding due to the prior work with Pythagorean theorem. She is able to easily grasp the concepts and apply them to various problems.
We also worked through her Biology homework. She is working on Meiosis and Mitosis. She has an upcoming test and was given a review guide.
During this session we reviewed some Biology, specifically covering a chapter in the student's textbook on genetics. We reviewed some basic ideas related to genetics such as genes and alleles and allele dominance. We then talked about Mendel's experiments and how Mendel deduced his principles of genetics. We then talked about what occurs during crosses and how genes segregate and rearrange to give specific phenotypes. We also discussed test crosses to determine whether an individual is heterozygous or homozygous. We then solved problems on these topics practicing Punnett squares and their percentage calculations, and reviewing some of Mendel's laws and applying them to specific examples.
Today, we covered some elements of the nervous system; specifically, neuron morphology, resting potential, action potential channels, and action potential propagation. Student appeared to have a pretty good handle of the information in general, and with picture drawing was able to keep the facts she needed to know in order. Student had midterm on Thursday, and is continuing to work on problems in her problem book to ensure she understands all necessary concepts. No concerns from this session.
We went over the student's recent class topics on genetics, heredity and also flower reproduction. After going through the textbook content, we went through all of his relevant in-class worksheets and made sure to go over every question together and analyze why each answer he chose was right or wrong. Overall, the student made great progress and demonstrated a good grasp on the material.
We started new chapter of biology. Reviewed some of the old materials but did most of the new chapter. I simplified the materials and gave him examples and broke down the reactions dealing with photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and food webs.
