CLEP American Literature Tutoring FAQ

If you are knowledgeable about the literature of the United States, the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exam in American Literature can help you translate your subject mastery into college credit. It can even help you avoid taking a course that teaches material you have already mastered, giving you credit for lower-division prerequisites and allowing you into more advanced classes. Scoring well on this test allows you to receive credit for a two-semester American literature survey at certain colleges and universities.

The exam tests a great variety of detailed content, asking questions that assess your ability to recognize and analyze works of American poetry and prose (and some drama and nonfiction) from the colonial period to the present day. Questions about your understanding of the socio-historical contexts of these works and your mastery of vocabulary specific to literary analysis can also appear on the test. The exam can quickly become overwhelming due to the breadth and depth of subject matter with which it expects students to be familiar.

The student and I started the session by reviewing basic grammar. He had been unsure of a few things during his grammar pre-test/practice, so I went over a comprehensive grammar PowerPoint with him. He finally received his assessment exam results in the mail, and we saw that his lowest scores were on his essays, so we talked about those. We reviewed the differences between the two essays, and I gave him two prompts to plan. I wanted him to see the differences between the expository and persuasive writing techniques through the planning and writing processes. He planned for both prompts, and I will have him write and score the essays during our next few sessions.

The student and I continued working on an SAT essay prompt. We ran into difficulties constructing a coherent and concise thesis sentence. We spent time discussing examples and considering how these examples impact her main argument. She would benefit from strengthening and shortening her brainstorming process. She will bring the essay to review next week. We also discussed general tips for writing the SAT essay, and I gave her suggestions for SAT prep guides.

Today was the first day I met with the student and his family. His parents would like me to focus on the math part of the PSAT. He had completed a practice test, so we used the first part of our session to go over the math problems he missed. After solving those problems and identifying the areas that gave him trouble (geometry, sets, multiple multiples), he and I divided another math section into four small sections. I gave him about six minutes to do five questions, and then we checked them and determined how to get the right answer. After doing one section, we extrapolated his score and determined what it would have been for the entire math section.
