What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to help every student understand that they are able to conquer any subject through hard work and patience. I believe every student is unique in their learning ways and techniques and my goal is to cater to each one of them by developing confidence in them through patience and practice.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know the student better, find out what they like studying at school, find out where they stand in a particular subject at the moment and then find out what their difficulties are. From there, I would find out how this student likes to study, which tasks seem easier for him or her to accomplish that will leave a lasting result.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By giving them small tasks that will stimulate their interest in the subject and keeping them accountable to do them before our next tutoring session.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By creating a picture for them of how their parents will be proud of them when they succeed, by telling them about how education will help them advance in life faster, and by telling them success stories of people I know who were able to go through the struggles in learning and achieve their goals and dreams.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
By reading together with them and discussing what we read by asking questions and teaching them to go back to the text and find answers there.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Show them that I am their friend, I am there to help them and that I care.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would find out what the student enjoys doing in life, and I would find ways to relate that to the subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would ask questions. I would ask them to reflect on what they have learned, to paraphrase what I have just explained to them.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Find out what their goal is in asking me as a tutor for help, and based from there I would structure my sessions to fulfill that goal.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Be patient and respectful, and try to put myself in their shoes based on what I have learned from them, in order for me to understand them better and make it easier for them to go through the tutoring process.
