The student and I worked on percentages. She has a very good understanding of the process, but needs to be more attentive to computation. We discussed thinking about whether the answer found makes sense (without actually double-checking), as well as writing down more of her work in order to catch her mistakes.

We went over the basic steps to writing a timed essay including prewriting. We went over the formula for writing an effective introduction and the three step process for writing good body paragraphs. Asked him to write a timed essay tonight before our next meeting tomorrow morning.

I introduced student 1 and student 2 to some general strategies for the SAT and gave them a handout I developed on these strategies. We then began reviewing the question types and accompanying strategies for the Critical Reading section. We worked through some sample questions together as we practiced implementing these strategies. For homework, I assigned them a complete verbal half of a practice SAT. They will take it and score it themselves to see what areas we need to review and how this practice score compares to their scores on the real SAT that they took cold-turkey before our tutoring began.

This session the focus was Drawing Conclusions and Understanding of Vocabulary. The client did well reading through the higher level content. The passages were a little more challenging with the vocabulary and use of connecting previous knowledge. The material covered was linked to history and social studies content. From the previous meeting, the client completed the story and was able to recall the sequence of events. She understood the vocabulary and was able to connect her own experiences to the story.

The student and I continued to work through practice problems, focusing on data sufficiency skills, recognizing systems of linear equations, setting up complex algebra scenarios from word problems, and dealing with rates (distance problems, averages, person-hour problems, etc.).

Today we learned parts of the body and reviewed the months. The student also learned how to say 'he is happy' (or whatever emotion). He was also introduced to the question structure of 'what is your favorite...?". Whether he realized it or not, he probably spoke more Spanish today than other lessons. He was able to ask and answer questions from the worksheets, even if he was reluctant to do so. :D
