Exam verbal practice: reading comprehension strategies (word circling/underlining, process of elimination). Next time, we'll practice scansion and vocab questions.
Worked through first 14 verbal questions on the Verbal practice test #1 from the Review book, with special attention to word roots, trigger words, and finding conclusions (review of techniques introduced since beginning tutoring.)
Today, the student and I discussed strategies for the sentence completion and passage sections. We primarily reviewed the verbal section of the exam. We also discussed how to write a good essay, quickly.
The student and I went over the general format of the verbal section of the test. This session, we focused specifically on building vocabulary skills, using resources like the prep books and other prep websites. We focused on sentence equivalence questions, and worked with a variety of strategies for answering these questions (process of elimination, predicting an answer, identifying context clues, etc.).
The student has requested that we focus on the verbal portion of the test, as she is comfortable with the quantitative section. We worked on strategies for the sentence completion type of questions. She is struggling with vocabulary a bit, so I suggested that she study from a list of "word families" which groups related words rather than trying to memorize individual definitions for a long list of words because she is taking the test in less than a month.
Today the student had her book, so we went over the prep book's section on Verbal Reasoning, the section of the GRE on which the student thought she'd need the most work. We did many sample problems of all types of question on this section. She has a good grasp of the mechanics of the questions, and of the reading comprehension sections; she does need to work on her vocabulary, which is the element of the verbal section that we will focus on going forward.
