I am a junior Bioengineering major at the University of Maryland College Park campus and graduated from Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, NJ. I have tutored part-time extensively over the past few years, starting with mathematics for elementary and middle school students at the Brick Avon Academy in Newark, NJ, and since then have worked privately with students on a variety of subjects. I am proficient in a wide range of subjects primarily centered on the biological sciences and mathematics. With that said, my favorite subject to tutor for is test preparations for the ACT and SAT as although the exams are rigorous, there is a definite method for learning to take the tests and improving performance. Helping students through these stressful exams is highly rewarding as there is a very tangible benefit from proper studying for these tests and seeing my students excel is something that I strive for. I have found the best way to teach in a one on one environment is to connect with my students and through personalized attention find out where their strengths and weaknesses lie, then to work with them to build a foundation around their weak areas to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the subject material. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy an active lifestyle; through high school I was a sprinter on the track team, played for our varsity soccer club, and even played club rugby for two years. Since then I resigned to less demanding sports due to time commitments but still play for intramural teams at my college as well as taking time out to hike or kayak with friends as often as I can.

At heart, I have unshakable faith in each student's capacity to successfully navigate all subjects. All it takes is figuring out where our individual potholes are, and filling them in! No more flat tires on the same old bad habits or missing information. For me, the best part of tutoring is watching a student realize he or she is not limited to the difficulties of a subject or skill. I love the moment when a student says "I guess I could be a math person!" Or, "I dropped the word 'loquacious' in conversation, you should have seen their faces!"Too often, we define our capabilities in such harsh and rigid ways. If we don't understand math as quickly as our peers, we aren't good at math. If diagramming parts of speech doesn't make sense the first time, that must be the only way to learn it, and we're out of luck. If we get so nervous for tests that our minds go blank, we resign ourselves to grades that reflect nerves instead of knowledge. No! Albert Einstein didn't begin speaking till he was four years old - what if he believed that defined his future? With a creative approach, individually adapted explanations and examples, and cheerful tenacity, I work diligently with each student to overcome learning gaps, build confidence, and reach academic goals of all varieties.

My personal goals and desires are ultimately continue to grow professionally within the field of education / special education. As an educator I believe in life long learning and as a result I strive for growth in all that I do. Ultimately I would like to work for the state and own an educational facility for students with special needs. I anticipate that on my journey with Varsity Tutors I will attain a plethora of knowledge that I can apply across the field of education, to foster growth in the students I encounter now and in the future.

Hi, I am a former math / algebra I teacher and do enjoy helping students reach their goals and potentials. Algebra can be challenging but can also be quite fun. For 6 years I taught middle school students Algebra. Many of them didn't think they could accomplish the things they later did. With the right guidance, instruction and work, a lot is possible.

I graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Mathematics/Economics and minors in both Theater and Global Studies, and am tutoring the GMAT, SAT and a few high school math subjects. I like to incorporate into my lessons the psychology behind how we learn new concepts and thereby discover how to apply them appropriately. With both a tech and an artistic background, Im particularly interested in using technology to teach concepts in visual, interactive, and fun ways. Lately, when Im not working remotely as a CRM consultant or shooting photography, Ive been working on Prezi presentations and reviewing various test prep books to gather meaningful and common practice problems to teach. I would credit my teaching philosophy to my mom - a college psychology professor prior to immigrating to the U.S. The methods she used to help me learn and to drive my curiosity still influence how I think and learn concepts today. From her, I learned that a meaningful education requires more than just knowing facts and how to find the right answers. A good teacher must help students recognize their individual learning styles, discover any flaws in their foundation knowledge, set reasonable goals, and look for deeper meanings behind why a problem is best solved a certain way. Moreover, she taught me the importance of concise communication, organization and empathy when teaching. I think that not only is teaching more similar to coaching than lecturing and assigning work, but also clear presentations, goal-setting and practice are crucial.

United States Marine Corps Veteran, served 2006-2010.Finished prerequisite curriculum for Pharmacy school and took PCAT in 2012.Tutored General & Organic Chemistry at Valencia Community College (East)2013-2014Returned to school in 2014 to pursue a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering.Plan to start engineering program at UCF in the Spring.I first began my helping other students during my Organic Chemistry class. I seemed to understand it more readily than some other students and because of that many of them would ask for help after class and I would happily oblige. That's when I realized I really enjoyed it. That "Awwwhhh!" moment reaction people so often get when they make a conceptual connection is great. I relate to it well, having felt it many times myself. Its very gratifying to be able to help others accomplish the same thing. As I got deeper into higher level courses, some of which presented me significant challenges, I began to realize how much I could learn, and how important it was for me to develop independent study habits if I was to do well.I tutored for a year at the college level and as such I really began to think about and evaluate "What effectively helps students to learn?" Since then I have come to believe that tutoring is not simply about providing assistance to getting answers or finishing assignments. Those are important certainly, but they are products of a much deeper comprehensive process which comprises conception, trial, assessment, review, research, practice, and patience. Tutoring, especially with (but not limited to) younger students is about mentoring and providing students not just with the answers, but the ability to produce those answers on their own. This is unfortunately not a great business model, as the point being is to remove the use and need for the product. But that is the goal. There will always be cases where the need for helping the student close their current gap in knowledge and understanding between what they know, and what they need to know is the greater priority and more simply a matter of providing yes, no, and how to answers. This is valid. But in most cases, there is a larger need for further development and creation of learning and studying skills versus answers.

I'm graduating from medical school at Duke University this summer and finally have quite a bit of flexible time to tutor, something I really enjoyed doing all throughout college. Before med school, I went to Rice University for undergrad and majored in Biochemistry and minored in Business and Global Health Technologies. In many of the subjects I tutor, I've learned them not just once or twice, but three times (for example - General Biology, AP Biology, college-level Biology, and the ultimate med-school/real life application of Biology). Because I have been through the same learning difficulties, I know how to explain the topics in a way that is easily understood. As for my tutoring style, I like to get to know the student's goals, difficulties, and schedule, and tutor the student accordingly. In the tutoring sessions, if you don't have any specific questions or homework to do, I'll do a brief review of the topic, and then ask you to work a few example problems. This helps keep you both active and alert, and ensures that you're understanding the material. My past clients have included middle school students to college students. I've tutored a variety of subjects including the PSAT, SAT, Calculus, Biology, Chemistry, English, and Geometry. In the far past, I have also tutored elementary school students and worked as a full time Teaching Assistant in an ESL program.I look forward to hearing from you!

I began tutoring college algebra and trigonometry during my sophomore year at Kansas State University because one of my math professors at the time offered that opportunity to several students in her Accelerated Calculus class. I found that I really enjoyed sharing what I had learned, helping a student see something from a different perspective or finally grasp a concept that they had struggled with. After I graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, I began a career in the US Air Force, first working for the Air Force Research Lab, and then working for the National Air and Space Intelligence Center as a scientific and technical intelligence analyst. I have continued to seek opportunities to teach, and to share what I know, with junior employees, with my nieces and nephews and with my own children.I enjoy teaching language, science, and preparing students for standardized testing, but I think I'm most passionate about teaching math because I believe learning math is helpful in developing brain function, in the same way that going to the gym is helpful to developing physical fitness. Although it requires effort, the process of learning math should involve the beneficial pain that leads to good results rather than the crippling pain that prevents any further progress that too many math students unfortunately experience.Beyond my work as an analyst and a tutor, I enjoy reading and spending time with my kids. Since I have eleven (soon to be twelve) children ages 28 down to 2, there are a lot of opportunities!
