This was my first session with the student. She is taking the ACT and wants to work on overall test prep and test taking strategies. We used this session to review ACT Science, as she feels this is one of the harder sections of the ACT for her. I tried to cover each of the different question types so that she could get a sense of what to expect on the test. We primarily covered questions in Biology, because I felt that that might be the most approachable topic. We also reviewed a few passages on the ACT website, because I wanted to recreate the feel of the ACT as closely as possible. We reviewed an Earth and Space sciences passage about conflicting viewpoints, a Biology passage that relied heavily on charts, and a Chemistry passage that focused primarily on methodology questions. For homework, I asked her to review more Science work.

We started with a brief revision of previous strategies we had discussed for answering questions in the Science and Math sections, with a couple of examples. We then spent the majority of the time discussing the English section--strategy and practice questions. For homework, I assigned practice tests from the official ACT practice test PDF. I've asked him to do the English, Math, and Science practice tests. I would like him to time himself and treat it as a real practice scenario, applying the strategies we've talked about. He can do the tests on different days and does not need to do them all at once in a row. I'd like him to review incorrect answers and let me know which numbers he got incorrect before we meet.

The student and I covered science and math concepts. We did a variety of science concepts, which he was overall good at. He needed to remember to read carefully but always understood the concepts after slowing down and looking more closely. We also went over fractions and some triangle math questions, giving multiple ways to solve problems when applicable. I gave him a PDF with equations to know for the ACT that should be helpful. I also suggested he review some more practice problems before his exam to get more comfortable.

Today the student and I focused on the Math, English, and Reading sections of the ACT. She did well on all three sections and she was able to use strategies she learned in our lessons, such as eliminating answers and looking for answers that were different than the other choices. She needed some guidance on a few problems but they were few and far between. We will work on the SAT next week.

Today we worked on some math and science. The student was pretty good with the math when discussing the questions and how to get to the correct answer. Timing was also a pretty big issue with science and math. When challenged with a race, she responded really well and got through a science passage in about five minutes. I'm going to send her some more to practice for homework to work on timing.

Today, the student and I started the session where we left off, working on Reading problems. He did very well as we completed a full practice Reading test. We were particularly paying attention to his time, making sure that he completed each section within about 8.5 minutes. He completed all the sections under 9 minutes each and only missed a total of 4. This was very good, and I encouraged him to keep practicing these, as this section could really boost his composite score. At the end of the session, we worked on English, which he said is the section in which he has the least confidence. We will also focus on this section in our next session.
