I don't believe that there is such a thing as a bad student. I am very aware of the existence of bad teachers. These teachers often end up teaching English or Foreign Languages. The thing that often differentiates a good from a bad teacher is the ability to empathize. Bad teachers will have little p...

Students are smart in their own way, whether or not they understand a topic at the beginning, middle or end of a lesson varies from student to student. All that matters, is that the student is to comprehend, analyze, and recite back with full confidence what they had learned as if they knew it all a...

Ellis

ACT Prep Tutor • +23 Subjects

Hey! My name is Ellis, I majored in Computer Science at Evergreen State College. Before CS I was a math major and tutored math privately. I absolutely love helping other people to achieve a clear, intuitive understanding of quantitative subjects. It's all too common for folks to struggle with math and even stress out about it. I hope to help more students to realize that math isn't scary. The most important thing is that we take the pressure off. The primary goal of the tutor should be to make the subject approachable and comprehensible. Once we unlock your intuitive quantitative skills you will find things like math and physics are much simpler than you thought!

ACT English Tutor • +25 Subjects

Although new to Varsity Tutors, I spent the last year at a tutoring center, specializing in English and History. A favorite with the students, I work with you to identify a goal: a higher score on the SAT reading section, persuasive essays, elegant written communication. Together, we create a plan for success. Along the way, I act as both the coach and cheerleader. I believe in celebrating those small victories the right verb tense, the corrected clause error, the artfully placing the semi-colon. I use storytelling and metaphor to make difficult concepts relatable, and my background in theater and performance keeps students engaged. My strongest subjects include the English, Reading, and Essay portions of the ACT and SAT; the AP US and World History, and English Literature and Language tests; essays and research papers; and basic language and grammar acquisition.I recently moved to Portland from the SF Bay Area, and I am using this year to enjoy the sights and sounds of the city as I pursue my teaching credential. I am an accomplished home cook I wish I could list cooking lessons on my profile! My sport of choice is Overwatch. And I'm a feline fanatic.I hope to hear from you soon!

I graduated from Reed College in Portland and then earned my Master's in English language and literature at SUNY Binghamton in New York. My intention is to purse a PhD program and one become a professor. I believe that good communication is vital to good teaching, regardless of the subject. I have always had strong mathematical abilities, and feel that I effectively assess and convey the relevant conceptual framework needed to approach problems. Therefore my main subjects are Literature, English, and Mathematics. In my spare time I enjoy reading, traveling, studying music, and science. I was a student of Chemistry for several years, but then I decided to pursue literature for my degrees. My favorite author is Shakespeare (I have one article about his plays accepted for publication by a British journal), but I enjoy various time periods and genres of English studies. People often tell me that my enthusiasm for the subject makes me very engaging, and I hope to share this with the students I tutor. Given my interest in good communication, I also will offer pointers for effective writing and public speaking.

My favorite thing about teaching is getting to know my students and finding out what they love. By finding out what a student is passionate about, I can help connect that to their learning goals. This way, they are engaged in learning and feel that it's actually relevant to their lives.I first became interested in teaching during my initial years at NYU, where I developed my own course of study on Child and Adolescent Literacy. I studied how reading develops in a child's brain and how reading is taught in schools. I also focused on how diversity in children's literature impacts identity development. I went on to study Education at UCLA in their Teacher Education Program, where I earned my MEd and California Preliminary Teaching Credential. Throughout my college years, I gained experience working with Pre-K, TK, K, 1st, 2nd, and 4th-grade classes. Once I obtained my credential and graduated, I gained more experience working at a bilingual (Spanish) school teaching 1st-grade, and later at art and social justice-based school teaching 6th grade.I've been an assistant and student teacher in Pre-K, TK, K, 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade. I've been the lead teacher in 1st grade and 6th-grade classrooms. I've taught all subjects in both English and Spanish at the elementary level.Outside of tutoring, I love watching TV and movies. I probably spend at least 1-2 hours a day checking out new content. My favorite shows right now are probably Westworld, Money Heist, and Elite. I also love reading books, mostly fiction and YA. If I'm outside, I like to skateboard and try to land new tricks, either on my street or at the skate park.
