I am currently a student at Brigham Young University studying Applied Physics. After finishing my degree I am planning on pursuing a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering. Since January 2014 I have worked in the physics help lab at BYU. Throughout this time I have greatly enjoyed helping many students increase their understanding of physics. I love seeing my students have a "light-bulb" moment where suddenly everything we discussed makes sense to them. I think it is extremely important for everyone to have (at least) a basic understanding of math and science as this helps us to better understand our world. I am greatly motivated to teach in a way that my students understand the fundamental principles and not in a way that they can merely get the right answer. I love trying to pass on my enthusiasm for math and science to my students, and I am always looking for ways to show how cool and fun mastering these subjects can be. Although I am most passionate about physics, I also tutor math and Spanish. When I'm not studying or teaching I enjoy swimming, reading (especially Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card), and exchanging movie quotes with my roommates. I'm studying to receive my Bachelor's in Math Education at Brigham Young University, but I was previously a Physics-Astronomy major. I discovered my love for teaching and tutoring as I helped my younger siblings with math and physics while I was in high school, which I continued to do using Skype after leaving for college. In college, I learned the value of working on homework in groups, and often explained concepts to others in the group, helping them understand the material for themselves rather than just giving them the answers. My favorite part about helping others learn is seeing their confidence in their abilities grow as the connections are made and as they are able to work through problems with limited assistance from me. By the time I've finished helping someone, I want them to have grasped the material, but also to have confidence and excitement at what they've achieved. I tend to tailor my teaching style to the person I'm working with, but generally have more of a discussion with the student rather lecture at them. I am passionate about enabling students with learning differences to succeed, as I have ADHD and depression myself, and have had to figure out how to make the school system work for me, while managing my mental health. My favorite subjects to tutor are math and physics, in large part because I find them fascinating, but also because most people find them harder, so it means more when they understand it. Outside of school, I love playing board games and card games and reading fantasy books.

With the hard sciences, you have to take a methodical and meticulous approach to learning. I believe this applies to teaching as well. I used this methodology when I taught English for two years in the Ukraine. I worked with multiple small groups, each with their own leader who I had chosen for their skill. They would perform their exercises while I would monitor their progress. We would also have a discussion afterward about topics that concerned or interested them. When I have time to myself, I enjoy keeping both my body and mind sharp. To achieve this, I like learning other languages as well as practicing gymnastics. I am also interested in reading scientific articles because I want to keep up with current developments in my field.
