Provo families navigating 33 schools across four districts — including Provo City and Alpine — know that classroom instruction, with an average student-teacher ratio of nearly 20:1, can only go so far. For students aiming to excel on the ACT, SAT, or AP exams, or to push deeper into Utah Core Standards in math, science, and English, personalized 1-on-1 instruction is what separates strong performance from exceptional results.
That first session with a Varsity Tutors-matched tutor is built around assessment: understanding your student's learning style, pinpointing where to focus, and building a plan around your specific goals. Tutors bring deep subject knowledge and familiarity with Utah's curriculum, and most families report noticeable grade improvement within 4-6 weeks — or meaningful ACT/SAT score gains after 8-12 weeks of consistent preparation. Scheduling flexes around your family's calendar, whether that's weekly sessions or targeted test prep.

I'm not that guy! Like many students, understanding comes with repetition of principles and hard work. I have the perspective of a student trying to understand, not a teacher trying to preach. I am a senior at Brigham Young University under an academic scholarship and working towards my English Teaching B.A. After obtaining my degree I plan to become a high school English teacher. I have been tutoring students for seven years in various subject fields, particularly in remedial English and ESL classes as an in-class peer tutor. I also love to tutor for the ACT and want to help as many students as possible realize their biggest dreams within the world of academia (and encourage their other dreams outside of it!). I enjoy tutoring because I love to help students build confidence in school, and help them learn how to enjoy learning. There are so many students that are discouraged and disheartened in the typical classroom setting because they aren't able to receive the individualized attention they require. I love to relate academic concepts to the student's personal life and teach them better habits for eventual success on their own. I am a firm believer that everyone has a unique learning style, and I like to help students discover what theirs is and the ways that they can change their study habits and how they participate in the classroom. Once the student learns how they learn best, they become much more confident going forward in school and feel a significant reduction in anxiety during tests (a challenge many students face). When I'm not focused on my own school work or helping others excel in theirs, I love to read, create paintings with watercolor pencils, and participate in musical theatre.

I am a licensed secondary math teacher. I recently graduated with my degree in Mathematics Education from Brigham Young University. Their program is ranked one of the best in the nation for preparing undergraduate math educators. I took classes from nationally recognized professors with decades of experience. My favorite part of tutoring is to watch students learn. I love to see those moments when the light bulb comes on for them. I believe that different students need to learn differently. I am patient and encouraging with students as we figure out what they need. I enjoy breaking concepts down as much as it takes for students to begin to understand and build up. I think this conceptual understanding is crucial and I love helping others create it. I have experience both tutoring in person and online. I have tutored online on and off for about two years. I worked for a year as a general tutor at a dorm where I focused mostly on high school math and chemistry. I tutor all math: everything from elementary to college subjects. I also tutor Spanish; I lived in South America for a year and a half and speak fluently. Besides teaching I love hiking and camping. My favorite way to spend an evening is out at the park playing sports with my husband.

I'm studying to receive my Bachelor's in Math Education at Brigham Young University, but I was previously a Physics-Astronomy major. I discovered my love for teaching and tutoring as I helped my younger siblings with math and physics while I was in high school, which I continued to do using Skype after leaving for college. In college, I learned the value of working on homework in groups, and often explained concepts to others in the group, helping them understand the material for themselves rather than just giving them the answers. My favorite part about helping others learn is seeing their confidence in their abilities grow as the connections are made and as they are able to work through problems with limited assistance from me. By the time I've finished helping someone, I want them to have grasped the material, but also to have confidence and excitement at what they've achieved. I tend to tailor my teaching style to the person I'm working with, but generally have more of a discussion with the student rather lecture at them. I am passionate about enabling students with learning differences to succeed, as I have ADHD and depression myself, and have had to figure out how to make the school system work for me, while managing my mental health. My favorite subjects to tutor are math and physics, in large part because I find them fascinating, but also because most people find them harder, so it means more when they understand it. Outside of school, I love playing board games and card games and reading fantasy books.

Hi, my name's Jeff. I'm 34 years old and I live in the United States of America. I received a bachelor's of science in biochemistry from Brigham Young University. With the hard sciences, you have to take a methodical and meticulous approach to learning. I believe this applies to teaching as well. I used this methodology when I taught English for two years in the Ukraine. I worked with multiple small groups, each with their own leader who I had chosen for their skill. They would perform their exercises while I would monitor their progress. We would also have a discussion afterward about topics that concerned or interested them. When I have time to myself, I enjoy keeping both my body and mind sharp. To achieve this, I like learning other languages as well as practicing gymnastics. I am also interested in reading scientific articles because I want to keep up with current developments in my field.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Provo's 33 schools and all 4 school districts with personalized 1-on-1 instruction. Whether your student attends a school in the Provo City School District, Alpine School District, or other local districts, we can match them with a tutor who understands Utah's curriculum standards and local educational expectations.
Tutors work with students to master the specific skills and concepts outlined in Utah's Core Standards, ensuring they're prepared for state assessments and grade-level expectations. With Provo's average student-teacher ratio of 19.6:1 in classrooms, personalized 1-on-1 tutoring provides the focused attention many students need to close learning gaps and build confidence in challenging subjects.
Provo students commonly seek tutoring in math, science, and English language arts—subjects where personalized instruction makes the biggest difference in test scores and grade improvement. We also work with students preparing for AP exams, ACT/SAT standardized tests, and students needing support with foundational skills in elementary and middle school.
Your first session is an opportunity for the tutor to assess your student's current level, understand their learning style, and identify specific areas where they need the most support. The tutor will also discuss your goals—whether that's improving grades, preparing for a test, or building skills in a particular subject—so they can create a personalized plan tailored to your student's needs.
Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have deep subject knowledge and experience teaching students at all levels. Many tutors have backgrounds in education, hold relevant degrees, and understand Utah's curriculum standards and the specific challenges Provo students face in their classrooms.
Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring addresses the root causes of academic struggles—whether it's a gap in foundational skills, difficulty understanding a specific concept, or test anxiety. By working one-on-one, tutors can slow down, reteach concepts in different ways, and build your student's confidence, which often leads to noticeable grade improvements within a few weeks.
Pricing varies based on the subject, tutor qualifications, and frequency of sessions. We work with families to create flexible schedules that fit your needs—whether your student needs weekly sessions during the school year, intensive help before a big test, or seasonal support. Contact us to discuss your situation and get a personalized quote.
Many students show noticeable improvement in grades and confidence within 4-6 weeks of consistent tutoring, though the timeline depends on the subject, the student's starting point, and how frequently they meet with their tutor. For test preparation like the ACT or SAT, students typically work with a tutor for 8-12 weeks to see meaningful score increases.
