The student was a lovely young girl and a real joy to work with! She has a sweet disposition, a positive attitude and is able to explain herself well. She was able to "walk me through" a typical daily school schedule, describing the work that they are doing and what she finds most interesting & most challenging. We concentrated mainly on math (and mostly subtraction) - working on skip counting by 2s & 10s, understanding the concept of place values of numbers containing up to 3 digits and counting, adding & subtracting money. The emphasis on subtraction problems will also help her to better understand the math concept of making change. We worked with coins arranged in columns & rows to help her better understand both subtraction & addition concepts by giving her a visual representation of the computation process. Arrays are also a great help in memorizing multiplication facts, so I believe they are a great math tool. I also had her read to me from a book that she is currently reading (and one that she enjoys). For homework I left her with some math problems and an assignment to write a 10 sentence story about fairies (the subject was her choice), containing a variety of punctuation marks. I believe that problem solving & creativity are both great forms of self-expression that build confidence.

The student will be taking the SSAT next Saturday so we are in the home stretch. I was able to show him a simplified way to find slope and he practiced several times and became confident in that skill where as before, he had just skipped those questions. We spent the rest of our time working on verbal skills and doing practice tests for math and synonyms. We also talked about his writing sample and how to write well - the biggest tip I have for him is to always write about something he feels passionately about. Think about the prompt and how you can relate it to something that you enjoy or feel positively about.

The student completed her four final online homework assignments, which covered polypeptides, peptide bonds, amino acids, primary, secondary, and tertiary structure of amino acids, condensation reactions, and hydrolysis reactions. The student was quite confident with the material following the end of the session. We also reviewed the student's third exam. She earned a B on this exam, which is an excellent improvement over her previous exam scores which were more in the C/D range. After discussing the exam, the student understood the correct answer to each of the questions she missed. We will aim for an A on her final exam.
