I am an undergraduate student at The University of Chicago who received my high school diploma from Rowland Hall in Salt Lake City, Utah. I am excelling in all my pre-med requirements. I am not completely sure of my major, but I am leaning towards a HIPS (History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science and Medicine) major and a French minor. I tutored a girl, middle school through high school, in any subject she required. It began as only math, but I soon began to tutor her in her science classes, especially helping her study, math, English, and French. I was able to help he raise her average grade from a C to a B+. I also have a younger sister, so while I wasn't her "tutor," I helped with a lot of math and writing homework and studying. I provide lots of practice problems, and I like to let the students lead the sessions as much as possible. I view my role as refocusing or guiding, but not pushing and telling. I hope to help students find study and homework habits that fit them rather than imposing my favorite ways upon them, though I will share any advice I have. Outside of school, I enjoy running, baking,, reading (from books like Harry Potter to Erasure) and exploring nature. Having lived in Salt Lake, I grew up with the outdoors as my main entertainment, though moving to Chicago has definitely increased my appreciation for the opportunities in a big city.

While earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in English, I spent four years working full time as a Writing Lab Consultant at my college's Center for Student Learning. My experience as a writing lab tutor was my first experience with, and truly ignited my passion for, teaching; as I honed my own writing and instruction skills, I developed best practices to communicate writing skills to students with varying educational backgrounds, writing experience levels, majors, and assignment types. I was ultimately able to gain the highest level of certification in the lab, the Master Level College Reading and Learning Association Certification, after many hours of tutoring and training sessions. I was invigorated by the challenging and rewarding experiences I had collaborating with students to help them develop their writing skills. I was thrilled to watch so many of them become better writers, and more confident students, than when they first entered the lab. This passion for working with students led me to complete my Ph.D. at Arizona State University in the interdisciplinary field of Gender Studies, where I am currently an instructor. I have taught college courses there for the past five years, and in addition to instructing in the classroom, I have greatly enjoyed working with individually students who are interested in going to graduate school, medical school, and law school, to work on their admissions essays and writing samples. Working with students, and helping them be successful, is my true passion, and I bring this passion into every tutoring session I completewhether that be in basics of composition: writing, editing, grammar, and syntax, more advanced questions of English and American Literature, or even some of my most challenging and rewarding sessions: creating thought-provoking application and college essays from scratch.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree at Ohio University, where I majored in Business and Interpersonal Communications. I then went out into the business world for a decade before earning my Master's Degree at the University of Phoenix here in Dallas.I have tutored students as young as 4-5th grade, and college students too, but my main concentrations have been with grades 7-12. I worked with 36 high school seniors who could not pass the TAKS Tests a few years back, and was able to get 35 of the students passing grades, which allowed them to graduate. I have also helped 8th graders who needed to take assessment tests to enter high school early pass the tests and successfully move up a grade. It is a wonderful experience to help students learn, and many of those whom I work with are really smart but just ned a little guidance, confidence, or an understanding at how to look at a problem a little differently. My main subject areas have been English, Writing, Public Speaking, Math, Science, United States History and Geometry. I also tutor standardized test taking. One of my strengths as a tutor is to take difficult subjects or concepts and make them easier to understand. I am completely dedicated to helping students get better. I like for teaching and learning to be fun, because students learn more if they are enjoying what they are being taught. My outside interests are enjoying time with my family, traveling, sports, and working out. In addition, I work with a non-profit organization that helps children, and we offer them sports and entertainment programs as a way to give them positive activities to do and goals to achieve.I look forward to working with you and helping you learn more and improve in your areas of academic interest.
