Session Summaries by Tutors

Cresskill, NJ tutoring
In today's session with the student, we reviewed probability, combinations, and permutations. He had a test today and so he wanted to go over a few problems that he found confusing on the test. Overall, he told me the first part of his test went rather well. He didn't struggle with any concept in particular, and we mostly used this session to strengthen his confidence in this material. We worked on using both the formula and slot method to solve permutations. I asked him to work on some probability problems from his textbook for extra practice. I look forward to hearing about how he does on the rest of his exam.

The student and I went over his last math test, which he failed. He is allowed to retake the test on Monday, so we practiced several problems until he was doing them himself correctly. We will meet again to resume studying for the test.

We began the session by discussing any important projects or upcoming tests, including her finals for the next 2 weeks. She informed me that she was currently working on a language arts project on a local historical shoe company, where skills in research and reference seeking were being utilized for an in-class project. I asked her if she needed any help, and I was able to help her get access to the list of eligible resources that she could use for this project, so she could finish the project as needed from home. Then, we moved onto her reading assignment which was based on hyperboles and personification. I briefly explained the two literary concepts to her, and she was able to complete the remaining questions on her assignment that she had not finished during school hours. We proceeded to her math assignment which focused on mean, median and mode. The questions used two different charts of numerical data on animals in order to calculate and analyze the three mathematical concepts. She did not show any struggle with completing her math assignment. I just had to make sure that the assignment was completed within our session. We also discussed her agenda for her upcoming finals within the next 2-3 weeks. I asked her to forward me her special finals schedule in time for tomorrow's session, so that we could begin preparing for her finals sufficiently. I also advised her to spend any remaining spare time later this evening to study for tomorrow's social studies quiz on the European Renaissance and the science test on rocks and minerals if she hadn't done so already.

The student and I worked on preparation for an upcoming test on logarithm and rational functions. His overall understanding of the concepts is fine, he just needs to avoid making some algebraic errors, which we encountered during the course of the session and addressed. We will meet as needed in the future.

We did a review for chapter 4 exam. Most of the concepts the student has mastered, and only a few problems need more self review. Good luck and get better over break!

We studied for the student's Physics and Pre-Cal tests tomorrow. She has a very good grasp on the physics material, and she will do fine on the Pre-Cal if she remembers to convert the rate percent into a decimal and to subtract the principal amount from the total amount to find the profit for a period, in terms of the effective rate.
