Tutoring review by Sarah in Alden, NY
Yesterday Priscilla and I worked on math. There were word problems and she had to decide whether or not to add or subtract. We then went over all the problems she got wrong on her last test. She said that she didn't have time to finish the test and several answers weren't answered and were counted wrong. In meeting with this student I've noticed that she has a really difficult time with her multiplication facts. I've also noticed that she gets really self conscious when she doesn't know them, I have made sure to tell her I struggle with them too - that they are hard. I asked her about it and she said that she never learned them. I asked her if I made flashcards if she would like to study them with me. She really liked that idea. I will have flashcards with all the facts on them for our next visit.

The student's final case was about using the chi-squared statistic to compare two groups' preferences. We reviewed how to carry out the chi square test in Excel, for two different tables. We also used a z-test to compare proportions across the two tables to aid in interpretation for her case. Our next session will be spent reviewing for her course final.

The student and I went over complex numbers and product/sum of roots of quadratic functions. We also went over some word problems on mixtures and finding the amount of each substance using algebraic equations. She did a very good job overall and has no issues with the concept, as we did practice problems during the session. Overall, it was another great session with her.

In preparation for the student's test, we covered all the concepts she'll need to be ready for on the test. After reviewing her previous quiz corrections, I gave her several problems, basic and advanced. They gave her practice on log function problems, solving equations with exponents, rewriting logs, and changing the log base. She did very well on these problems and indicated she felt much more prepared for her test.

During this session we prepared for the student's cumulative geometry final. This exam is over 6 chapters, though we focused on the last three at they contain the material that she needed help with most. This included similarity postulates, congruence postulates, and the properties of lines intersecting triangles. By the end of the session, she was very clear on these concepts.

We covered limits, specifically the squeeze theorem and limits to infinity. I gave a couple of tips on how to reframe problems. The student is really starting to get the hang of the material. I did leave more practice problems than usual so that we could wrap this topic up and move on.
