I am an undergraduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. I have been tutoring for over 6 years now, and I have found it to be an extremely rewarding and enjoyable experience. I specialize in mathematics, particularly at the high school level, and I also have experience tutoring other subjects. I also have done SAT prep for the mathematics section of the New SAT and am very familiar with the recent changes to the exam. My belief is that everyone is capable of learning with enough time, explanation, and practice, and I hope to pass this on to all the students I work with. For this reason, I believe in teaching students how to think and problem solve, rather than just having them memorize patterns or facts.

I am a rising junior at Princeton University pursuing a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy with a certificate in Statistics and Machine Learning. I am highly passionate about education: during the academic year, I serve as a volunteer tutor for the Petey Greene Program, which provides educational assistance to those incarcerated in New Jersey prisons; after graduation, I hope to work toward becoming a high school mathematics teacher. This summer, I am interning part-time at IntegrateNYC4me, a nonprofit that seeks to integrate New York schools. I believe that quality educational opportunities should be accessible to all, and I hope to dedicate my career toward realizing this vision!
I am well schooled in academic writing and reading comprehension; furthermore, I have honed my ability to write pointed, direct essays for both applications and classes. After studying French in high school, I went on to spend over six months in France working on archaeological excavations. As a previous educator for high school students, I am versed in different learning styles and can't wait to work with more. I am extremely passionate about academics and learning; the value of each was inculcated into me at a very young age. I tutor a variety of subjects largely because I have so many areas of interests and have been privileged enough to pursue knowledge in those areas. I even enjoy tucking away "useless facts"...in fact, those very tidbits got me past the Jeopardy! Online Test and into the Contestant Audition!
I am a rising sophomore at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in International Relations and minoring in French and English. The studies of English and Literature have been my passion for a long time. I enjoy reading about cultures while familiarizing myself with the world’s diverse peoples. In my first year of University, I took three English courses and an intensive Writing Seminar which helped me develop my ability of analyzing, interpreting and explaining complex English texts while improving my written and oral communication skills.
I'm a big Boston Celtics fan and I speak three languages. I can get you the test results you need to succeed because I went through the exams myself and performed well. The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. I am good at test taking, is my ability to organize information. It's a skill I use both in my academic life, as well as professionally; as a stage manager, it is often my job to take in complicated and conflicting pieces of information (the blocking, a quick change in costumes, changes in a script) and quickly organize that information so that I can convey it to someone else. I enjoy and excel at condensing and re-communicating facts or tasks, so that they become comprehensible to someone who may not understand them the first time around.
I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I am a rising junior at Vanderbilt University studying chemical engineering and mathematics. Throughout high school, I tutored both individuals and groups in a variety of subjects including algebra and physics. At Vanderbilt, I've had the opportunity to teach at local Nashville elementary and middle schools as part of Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science. I am passionate about tutoring math and science, and even though these subjects are often considered "dry," the right teaching style can spark any student's interest. When it comes to standardized test preparation, I've found that knowing the intricacies of a test can improve a student's score just as much as knowing the subject material can. Different students learn in different ways but that kind of personal attention is difficult to provide in a classroom. With one on one tutoring sessions, any student can excel, even in the subjects he or she has the most trouble in. When I tutor a student, my first goal is to figure out the best way to teach this individual, as no single style can suit everybody. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball, watching football and soccer, exercising, and reading about modern science and new technology.

My PhD research is in West African music. I'm just not very good at it." People tend to not be very excited about topics that they don't understand. Teachers and grades have been making them feel bad whenever they come to class, and there is nothing more frustrating than studying for hours and still not getting any concept. These sorts of things can make someone feel defeated or unintelligent. To that end, the simplest way to get a student to become excited about learning is to counteract these negative effects with healthier, positive learning strategies. When students seriously get something, don't move on immediately to the next topic, but instead dwell on what they get for a while, solidifying it and making them feel intelligent and like future concepts are within their grasp. Build pride in each student for the progress and work they complete so that they are eager to master each concept. In addition, to get students more engaged in topics, I try to emphasize the real-world applications of anything I teach. As an applied mathematics major, I can appreciate more than most how the subjects people study can affect the real world. So when students groan "When am I ever going to have to use this?" I can actually give a satisfying answer that will make them realize how powerful what they learn really is. This tends to make students less dismissive and care a lot more about the concepts at hand. While I can't promise that these methods will make a student love their school subjects as much as sports or video games, they tend to make them appreciate and care about the material as well as feel validated by it. In turn, this leads to a much more serious and sustained effort and enjoyment of the subject.
