Session Summaries by SAT Writing and Language Tutors

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by James in Framingham, MA
During this session we discussed logarithms, exponents, and sequences. We also went over vocabulary and a few questions on tone. The student is doing very well; she makes almost no mistakes on CR and knows how to approach just about every math problem. I am encouraging her to write out all the steps when she does a math problem, because skipping steps can lead to errors. Since she usually has time left over on math sections, I think she could benefit from this strategy.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jonathan in Framingham, MA
The student and I reviewed the practice sections she completed over the past couple of days. She is performing very strongly on the math sections, but I believe there is still room for improvement on both the writing and reading sections. For writing, I would like to review the major categories commonly tested grammar and get her to approach the questions in a more scientific manner, as she seems to be getting the no error questions consistently incorrect. Her reading has improved, but I believe she can fine tune these skills over the next two weeks. Her essay was better, but she is still drawing from the same general category of ideas for examples. I have assigned her another essay, which she is to write this week. She should come up with 4-6 examples, pick the best two, and write the essay. I also want her to continue reviewing current events in her spare time so she has another category of examples to pull from.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Thomas in Framingham, MA
The student and I reviewed vocabulary and then moved to the essay section. She has a lot of strength in writing and just needs to learn the particulars of SAT essays. We will spend a couple of sessions on this. We reviewed common prompt types and structural approaches to essays. She quickly adapted to the format and understands what needs to be done to ensure a high score. Her homework was vocabulary based, writing out original sentences for her vocabulary words to really drive them into memory.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Brendan in Framingham, MA
The student and I went back over the chapter in his review book about techniques for the critical reading section. I recommended that he take a look at the chapter review before practicing exam problems, that way the techniques are fresh in his mind while working on the problems. We finished the session with some practice problems.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Jasmine in Framingham, MA
We went over the writing problems I assigned 2 days ago. Then we went over improving paragraphs in the writing section and a bit more algebraic equations. I assigned him more writing problems for next week. The student made progress in identifying errors in sentences but struggled with the math section, specifically solving systems of equations.

SAT Writing and Language Tutoring review by Joy in Framingham, MA
The student completed a section of the SAT reading and writing, and we reviewed it together. He has made substantial improvements. He got 25 correct on his first try (a large increase from his last full length SAT), and 37 correct when he revised/ thought through them on his own when we reviewed. He still struggles with punctuation, but his parent bought a book that seems like it will be helpful for that.
