Reading Tutoring review by Abby in Mokena, IL
We began by reviewing some of the new vocabulary words we learned in the student's book last week. We discussed again the concept that sometimes the 'gh' letters together make the 'f' sound, and sometimes they are silent. Next we picked up the Laura Ingalls Wilder biography where we'd left off, and as the student read we periodically stopped for comprehension check-ins. She understands the story very well, despite a somewhat halting fluency in her out-loud reading. As she is helped with decoding, she is able to continue reading with minimal difficulty comprehending. I had her focus today on writing down her thoughts about pieces of the story. She has difficulty translating her ideas from her head to the paper, and I think this affects her reading. She needs practice writing complete sentences, and grasping that new thoughts (sentences) always start with a capital letter and end with punctuation. The more fully she understands this concept, the more fluid her reading will become. When coached on capitals, proper spacing, and end punctuation, she was able to write down facts that she remembered from the story very well.

Reading Tutoring review by Karen in Mokena, IL
We worked on reading and practiced spelling words. We read grade 2 books, but the Grade 3 book was a bit challenging. I've asked him to write some sentences about the books we read or share some of his earlier stories with me. This might be a way to get him more interested in reading, or help him develop his "sparkling" words.

Reading Tutoring review by Arpita in Mokena, IL
The student read 14 of the 22 books that he was given from last week. The first 10 we had read last week. What was great to notice was that he was quicker at reading those 10 books. He still has some difficulty reading the word 'look', but he definitely improved with more practice. He did fine with the newer books (11-14) today and did not struggle with any particular word. Repetition of words is still working well with him, so I will continue using that strategy.
