The student and I split this session between the Critical Reading and the Multiple Choice writing sections of the SAT. We began by going over the reading passages that he had completed for homework after our previous session to establish how much work we still needed to do for him to feel comfortable with his pacing. At this point, he is getting excellent results in terms of correct answers but as of the beginning of the session he still needed to shave a few minutes off each passage. After we moved on to the writing section, for which we reviewed general skills and discussed particular traps to watch out for in the questions, the underlying issue that was causing most of his time management challenges came to light. In particular he felt uncomfortable moving on to the next question until he had reviewed his answer choices and the sentence, alternative versions, or passage sections as many times as it took for him to feel 100% certain that he chose the correct answer. As a result, he did very well on the questions he had time to look at but often ran out of time with a quarter to a third of the questions left in any given section. We talked through some self-talk and prioritization strategies he can use to short circuit this tendency and both his speed and his confidence increased dramatically.

Today was my first session with the student. After introducing ourselves, I discussed the results of his diagnostic exam with him and asked him what he felt were the areas in which he needs improvement. He responded that the critical reading section was his most difficult section. I inquired about his current approach with regard to the critical reading section, and he said that he usually starts answering questions without reading through the entirety of the passage. I warned him that this strategy can often leave students susceptible to "traps" set by testmakers. We then proceeded to work on sentence completion and passage-based reading questions together. With regard to sentence completion questions, I believe a stronger vocabulary would help. For the passage-based reading questions, as I had advised, he read through the entire passage before answering questions, and he informed me that he felt that answering the questions was much easier this way. I will be sending him some vocabulary to review prior to our session next week.

During this session, the student and I covered the ACT English section. I had her do one passage on her own, then we went over it in detail and I taught her the common questions that the ACT writers normally ask and how to tackle them. She missed 9 questions on the first passage. I then had her do another passage after we had reviewed it, and she only missed 2 questions on that one!
