Writing has always appealed to me as one of the few ways to share who you really are with someone else. To be able to do this more accurately, to more precisely convey who you are is a goal I believe to be worth pursuing.

Admissions Tutor • +22 Subjects

I have worked with many middle school and high school students to improve their writing so that they could succeed in high school and college. I have also counseled students on college admissions and edited hundreds of college application essays at the undergraduate and graduate levels (including for medical school). I have written books, professional articles, and podcast episodes over many years. For three years, my college admissions podcast (USACollegeChat) reached thousands of prospective college students and their parents. My specialties are improving grammar, punctuation, and capitalization; writing concise and engaging sentences; building perfect paragraphs; and putting together an essay that is meaningful and persuasive. I love to help others improve their writing and believe that there is no way to do that other than over-the-shoulder working together. Many of my students would tell you that they have never had a teacher/counselor who cared about them more than I did. I am most proud of that!

I'm a sophomore at Yale University working towards a major in Ethics, Politics, and Economics. I have experience tutoring both in person and online, with agencies and independently. I tutor standardized tests, English reading and writing, Spanish, and Latin, as well as my favorite subject to teach: math. I love teaching math because seemingly complicated problems can always be broken down into simpler steps, and it is rewarding to help students understand concepts that seem daunting to them at first. While tutoring math, it is very clear that each and every student has potential, and some use need guidance to discover what they are capable of. The best way to help someone learn is to show them how to take and active role in the learning process. Apart from tutoring, I also love painting in both oil and watercolor, playing rugby, and skiing.

In all of my capacities as an educator and tutorwhich range from lecturing at the University of Michigan to instructing summer courses on college-application essays to tutoring elementary students as a Peace Corps volunteer in ThailandI continue to see the power of critical thinking when fueled by curiosity. I believe that this coupling of curiosityor "inquiry," as some of us call itand textual analysis can change the world. Being able to think critically about who we are, what we believe, and why we believe it given our personal contexts allows us to enter into new, exciting spaces where we can really, tangibly, impact our culture. Guiding this process is my passion.I will be starting my PhD (Media Studies) this Fall at Northwestern University and look to continue tutoring throughout my studies. Although that will place me in Chicago, I'm a Michigander at heart, having lived most of my life in mid-Michigan. I received my B.A. (Journalism) at Michigan State University; I taught college composition at the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University; and nothing makes me happier than strapping up my kayaks and exploring the state's rivers and lakes. I am confident in my ability to help students with any situation where they are trying to convey a purpose to an audiencebe it in the form of ACT/GRE prompts, college-application essays, textual analyses, newspaper articles, or just basic essay editing.I also have two years of experience teaching ESL from my time in Thailand. :)

AP U.S. Government & Politics Tutor • +19 Subjects

I graduated from Princeton University in 2005 with an A.B. in Astrophysics, and a minor in Near Eastern Studies. After graduation, I lived in Egypt for a year and a half studying Arabic at the American University of Cairo. I had always been interested in foreign policy and the Middle East (my father was a diplomat in the region). When I returned to the United States, I worked for Exxon Mobil and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Capitol Hill before starting law school at Georgetown in 2011.While in law school, I became a much more organized and effective thinker and explainer. In other words, I became a much better teacher. Law school gives you the skills to tailor your argument to the person in front of you. And I think this is what makes a good teacher. People learn in all sorts of ways, and it's the job of a good teacher to tailor his/her explanation of the material to the student's needs. After law school, I have held several jobs. I clerked for a Federal Judge in Cleveland, worked in statewide public policy in Ohio for two years, and now I am a drug policy advocate and writer in New York.I have a diverse set of interests and skills, and so I believe I can effectively tutor many different subject areas. I am an American History buff and have studied government/politics both in college and law school. I was trained in writing and public speaking in law school, and have employed both skills in various capacities since I graduated. I also can teach graduate test prep, including the LSAT.In my free time, I am a pretty social guy. I play and watch sports. I spend a lot of time with my little nephew. And I like to read.

I am very grateful for this opportunity to be a private tutor with Varsity Tutors because given my background and expertise, I am sure that I can help the clients that I meet overcome any difficulties or challenges that I may have. I had a lot of difficulties with math but I had wonderful teachers in high school and undergrad that helped me overcome them. English is my strongest area and my writing skills can help students who are struggling in English.

Aartee

ACT English Tutor • +27 Subjects

Hi there! My name is Aartee, Im a sophomore at Temple University, and I absolutely love literature, writing, and grammar. My love of English started when I was young; my parents fostered an early appreciation of reading from when I was three years old. I quickly became an avid bookworm, and I would read anything I could get my hands on. My affinity for reading followed me throughout my education, English has always been my favorite subject, and I took A.P. Writing and Composition and Advanced Literature in high school. I went to a college preparatory high school, so I am well versed in ACT and SAT standardized test prep. I started Temple University in the fall of 2016 as an English major, and have taken four college level literature classes to date.My experience with teaching began in high school. During my sophomore year of high school as part of my Girl Scout Gold Award I visited my grade school to teach students about the environment through a hands-on garden planting project. I worked with preschoolers to eighth graders, and it was through this project that I discovered I wanted to teach. Towards the end of my senior year of high school, I taught eighth grade students English and Math through a high school literacy program. After graduating high school, I took a year off in between graduating high school and starting college, and throughout that year I freelance tutored high school aged students in ACT and SAT prep. My most recent teaching experience has been with Temple Universitys Jumpstart Readers Program during the Spring 2017 semester. I volunteered with this program twice a week at a local preschool, and worked with students on fundamental literacy skills. This coming Fall 2017 semester I will be serving as a Jumpstart AmeriCorps member in between class.I am a dedicated and passionate tutor who understands the value of patience and communication. I have worked with a myriad of different students, and I recognize that different students have different needs, and that no two students learn the same way. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, and I would love to be your tutor! :)

I have a Master's Degree in History from the University of Alabama. I also have a J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law. I can help students at all levels with their understanding of history, essay writing, test preparation, test-taking and study skills. I can also help with first-year law courses and LSAT testing. At both the University of Alabama and Atlanta Metropolitan College, I taught U.S. and World History. I am well versed in both subject areas. My student evaluations were always very high, and I focused on making History fun and relevant to things happening today. I try to take history from boring facts to interesting connections that tell a story and explain why events come about.I also try to focus on helping students learn to express their ideas through writing, both in formal essays and in class assignments. This can include writing well thought out thesis statements, analyzing the material, and making the correct connections from the material given to them, whether it is from a textbook or primary sources. Most importantly, I love teaching. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, and I am a patient tutor who is willing to work at the student's speed.Beyond teaching and tutoring, I enjoy watching movies, reading fantasy and science fiction books, listening to music, volunteering at the Atlanta History Center, and Alabama Football - Roll Tide!

I am a University of Iowa graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing. While at UI, I tutored fellow students in Writing and developed a passion for helping others to channel their strengths in areas where they may not yet excel. I have also worked heavily with ELL students on both academic and cultural understanding, and continue to enjoy working with students of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages. Every student learns differently, and as a tutor, I create a positive, comfortable learning environment and address students' needs based on their personalities and individual learning styles. Within the next couple of years, I am planning to pursue a masters or doctorate degree in Anthropology with a focus on Social Institutions. I look forward to working with you!
