I believe that every student can do math. Many students come to math discouraged or convinced that they are not "math people", but it is my core viewpoint that math is universal and there is a way for every person to not just learn math but enjoy an aspect of it.
For my personal background, I have a Bachelor's degree in Materials Science from MIT, a Master's in Science Teaching from Brown University, and am currently working towards a second Master's in Math Education. I have taught in both public and charter schools since 2014, working with students ranging from 6th to 11th grade with different ability levels. As such, I'm capable of tutoring classroom mathematics at all of those grade levels, but I do like teaching Algebra and Pre-Algebra the most. Introducing students to abstract thinking and the idea that math can be a puzzle to solve, rather than a series of rote steps, is a joy. I find puzzles of all types to be fun, and love sharing that experience with others. Holistically, I view education to be about discovery, and I strive to give students the opportunity to figure out systems themselves by guiding them through experiences, whether it is in teaching or tutoring.
