I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Madeline: Illinois tutor

Certified Tutor

I graduated from the University of Washington and received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. I am currently working on my Master's Degree to get a teaching certificate to teach high school math and science. While working on this degree, I have spent the last 3 school years working at a high school as an "Academic Support Specialist" and Substitute Teacher. In these roles, I assist students with Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, and Psychology on a daily basis, both 1:1 and in classroom settings. Additionally, I worked as an undergraduate teaching assistant in college for a statistics class in college and worked with students on a weekly basis. My favorite subject to tutor is probably Algebra (both 1 and 2).

I love to work with all types of learners and have experience working with students with IEPs and 504 plans. My favorite part about helping someone is the experience of witnessing someone have the material finally "click" for them after struggling for some time. To get to this point, I break down the material into smaller chunks to discover exactly where the misunderstanding comes from. I believe that a positive attitude is crucial when working with students, and I value communication and making sure they feel comfortable sharing with me when they are lost or confused with the material.
