When I was in my 20s and trying to figure out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, I read an article about Legionnaire's Disease. The studies showed that Legionnaires (who were staying in a hotel) got sick due to contamination of an air conditioning system. It read like a mystery novel! I loved it! I went into epidemiology because I love the thinking, the process, the methods.
What is epidemiology, you might be thinking to yourself? It is studying the causes of diseases in populations. We know that influenza is an infectious disease caused by a virus. We know that mostly because of epidemiology. Lab work had to verify it. Do you know how we learned that elevated blood pressure is a risk for heart disease? Or that tobacco causes cancer? The first clues came from epidemiology.
But it is more than that. The methods can be applied to many different subjects: health policy, health evaluation, health systems, quality improvement. And more. Statistics is a tool. Biology is a tool, lab work is a tool.
I can help with the logic, some of the basic statistics, perhaps point you in the right direction of a specific issue. I also know health policy. Want to know how we get from science to policy? I can help you get there.
What I am not good at are: organic chemistry! Calculus! Theoretical Statistics! Newer genetic and immunological processes.
If you want to talk to me about epidemiology as a career, I am happy to do that. I am happy to help in other areas where I am knowledgeable. I am pretty easy going and love to mentor.
In my spare time, I have 3 dogs, who love walks and hikes. I love reading mysteries, still. I love to cook. And I love to swim.
