I am currently pursuing a double major in Psychology and Statistics at University. I originally enrolled in University intending to major in Psychology. However, by sophomore year, a Statistics major was added to meet the challenge of understanding the statistical concepts often present in psychological studies. This decision was driven by a desire to build more confidence in data modeling and analysis, upon discovering that statisticians are integral across various disciplines including psychology. In the time spent studying psychology I quickly realized that math and statistics are male dominated fields. Psychology allowed me to analyze why women may not be as interested in these fields with the existence of stereotype threat. Education is empowerment and that is a belief that has only come to me because I study Psychology and Statistics.
The role I had as a student educator in sexual education and high school math allows me to directly apply my psychology and math skills. Teaching these subjects has improved my ability to communicate complex ideas in accessible ways. I intend on improving this skill through added experience and academic study. Working with young children at camp furthers my understanding of developmental psychology and educational techniques. This role challenges me to exemplify both empathy and analytical skills to create a supportive and stimulating environment for learning and personal growth. The fulfillment I obtain from seeing improvements in children's social and cognitive abilities motivates me to continue studying my fields.
In summary, my educational path at University is an academic pursuit that combines various disciplines to better understand and influence the world around me. I am so eager to continue this pursuit through graduate studies in the near future!
