Education is one of the most important fundamental building blocks for children. Properly educating children is what sets future generations up for success. As a mother of two children in the public school system, I volunteered in their classrooms whenever I could take off work. While I was in their classes, helping students decode words and count to ten, I realized I wanted to be a teacher, not just any teacher, but a teacher who would equitably serve all students.
Using culturally relevant practices in teaching and classroom management is a significant part of creating an equitable learning experience for my students. The benefits of a safe classroom environment go beyond the student's perception of the classroom and me. It aids in how students perceive the purpose of their education. Those who feel they are not just another body in the confines of school and have equitable learning experiences are more likely to apply themselves and graduate. My ultimate goal is my student's success.
In the education profession, I also need to support my students' intuitive nature and allow them to explore their own processes of thinking. Students need the opportunity to learn new materials and apply what they learned in hands-on scenarios, not just with assessments and worksheets. Allowing my students to use their explorative nature will unlock problem-solving skills that will create adult citizens who can think and solve problems independently, which is one of my many goals as an educator.
Furthermore, I must teach students the importance of kindness, respect, and good citizenship to prepare them for their futures. My students will respect and be kind to everyone in our school. I will teach them the importance of respecting others outside of school, such as at home with friends. They will learn and use their manners daily when interacting with others in school. They need to use manners all the time. Instilling these skills into my students will assist with how they interact with others as they grow and enter adulthood. They are life skills that will be very important to them as they grow and become adults. Entering adulthood with a solid understanding of respect and proper mannerisms will benefit them throughout their lives.
