I am always teaching, according to my wife. She says I never miss a chance to help a person gain knowledge. She thinks I do not trust her to know anything, but I do. I enjoy showing people the things I have learned in my 70 plus years of life.

When I was young, I went into law enforcement ending up as a guest instructor at the Academy. I specialized in accident investigation and breathalizer operations. Teaching young officers was a joy because I was often able to clear up misperceptions. Some of the older guys also learned valuable information, taking it back to their prospective departments.

While working as a police officer at Indiana University, I finished my Bachelor's degree. I took many criminal justice classes and used a program the college had to obtain a degree in general studies, which allowed me to enter a Master of Criminal Justice program. Unfortunately, I could not complete the coursework, but the work I finished before a significant family issue that took me out of the program was Masters's quality. I was a TA while in the program and taught on a one-on-one basis. I also had as many as 350 students in the large lecture hall.

I changed the direction of my life and earned a CDL driving in 30 states for two years and getting local jobs for two more years. The goal was always to go into management. The problem I faced was holding a CDL while interviewing for management positions. They all wanted me to drive. I finally found a place running a truck driver staffing service. After working one year for the company, my sales manager and I became disenchanted with the corporation.

We started our own business. The sales manager had the money and sales ability, and I had some business classes and experience running the business. Nothing like starting a business to learn what the business world is all about. It required me to think outside of the box to keep it going. We were underfunded. We needed a lot of money, and I had to learn how to write a business plan to get a line of credit. I was successful.

I started teaching DOT regulations to both my drivers and customers who knew nothing about hours of service rules and many other topics that governed DOT drivers. After leaving the company, I did everything from recruiting and safety to operations management. I always found ways to include teaching, even if it was just orientation in my daily duties. The drivers often told me I gave them the information they had never learned before.

Teaching is my first love. That is why I teach.

I love RC aircraft. model trains, boating, and camping. I am learning more about my camera and how to take photos. Learning new things is a major interest. Understanding battles of the civil war and trying to understand what was going through their minds as leaders of the battles are always interesting for me.
