I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I enjoy tutoring for the chance to learn about someone new, impart information, and watch their expression as the knowledge sinks in.

I was educated in the state of New Mexico: public schools in Albuquerque and BS, MS, and PhD physics degrees from the University of New Mexico (UNM).

I have taught Astronomy classes at UNM as a graduate student and in post-doctoral positions. I prefer to teach astronomy, mathematics, and physics, but can make sense of most sciences.

My teaching philosophy is simply to get the student to handle the subject well enough to progress in school. Sometimes I can see the only recourse is memorization (as with one of my kids), and will suggest that when necessary. My basic thrust is getting the student to understand and be able to generalize in the subject. Of course, my favorite results are seeing the light bulb turn on over the student's head and witness the "aha" moment.

I am retired from a 40-year career in nuclear-weapon effects, electromagnetic phenomena, and the generation of high-power microwaves. My primary hobbies are hiking, understanding the nature of people, and volunteer work, e.g., at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.
