I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I am one of the few people that will tell you I like school. My grades were always 90's, and even now I'm an A student. I know school doesn't come easy to some people. Therefore, I've always enjoyed helping others comprehend the work. When they go from having no clue on what to do, to getting 90's, I feel accomplished. I helped someone, and made a difference even if it was just to that person.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I don't believe in spoon-feeding information. I want to teach my students the love for learning. I want them to gain the skills to teach themselves.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session, I want to get to know my student. I want to find out if they're a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner. That way I know the best method to teach him/her.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way to teach a student to become an independent learner is by teaching them how to think critically. It's not always about knowing the formula, but trying to find ways to solve the problem.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will break up the concept as much as I can. If that doesn't work, I'll try to make it relatable to whatever the student is interested in. By doing this, they're able to form a connection, making it easier for them to comprehend the skill/concept.
