My name is Harrison and I am 21 years old and have a B.S. in physics. My favorite part of tutoring is when a student has an ah-ha moment because I know the excitement of finally understanding a concept you have been struggling with.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Evaluate their learning style and strong and weak areas in their subject. Also, get to know them so they feel comfortable working with me.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Lead them to the answer instead of doing problems and handing it to them. They will learn how to work through problems and apply that skill to new problems.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try explaining it in a different way, have them draw a picture, or use a metaphor applicable to their life.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Tell them about all the useful applications of a subject.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Have them explain a concept to me, or have them solve a similar problems with some minor adjustments compared to the one I worked on with them.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Evaluate their working knowledge so I know what style of learner they are and where their gaps in understanding are. Then, customize my teaching using that information in order to best help the student.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Being "bad" at a subject is a mindset, not an innate quality. It is my job to help the student realize their own potential and talents for whatever subject they need help in.
