Certified Tutor
I graduated from Calvin College with a Geology/Geography/Urban Studies degree. I went on to graduate from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and ISARA-Lyon with degrees in Agroecology and Organic Agriculture.
I started tutoring in high school and did so in college as well. In graduate school I assisted students with academic papers. Most recently I have been a high school Biology and Environmental Science teacher in an urban public school.
I am comfortable tutoring a variety of subjects. I am most passionate about cultivating a love for the natural world and enjoy teaching the life sciences. I believe that the love for learning is what motivates students to excel and that is what I hope to create.
My experiences with diverse students and education systems adds to my differentiated teaching style. In my spare time, I enjoy writing, cooking, and being connected to nature by gardening or farming.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, I first need to understand what they have learned and then modify my strategy for teaching the concept. Sometimes it is a matter of reviewing the concept, and other times it requires going back to the basics and taking a new approach to the concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I have a few different strategies I use with students struggling with reading comprehension. I like to encourage reading with a purpose by presenting students with questions to consider while reading. I also ask students to come up their own questions as they read. Graphic organizers help some students with reading comprehension. I find summarizing to be a good way to check for understanding, and it also help students connect the ideas they have read.
