I believe every student can learn whatever they want to learn. They just need someone to teach them. It takes a special person to learn what a student needs to have the most success in learning and I believe I can do that.

In my time away from my students I'm a mom to an amazing 3 year old and an aunt to 2 really awesome nephews. I love playing music and doing outside stuff with all the boys.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Everyone can learn what they want to learn. It takes a good teacher to help them get there.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Figure out the way that they learn so I can adjust my teaching method.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Build a strong foundation that leaves the student wanting more information on the subject.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive reinforcement, foundation building, and rewards for accomplishments.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find the best way possible to teach them the subject in terms that they can understand and work from there.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By breaking down sections of the book into smaller pieces and discussing what is read and answering simple questions that develop into harder questions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Each student learns and thinks differently, so I always take the time to learn what each student needs and build off the knowledge they have. I build a rapport with them so they know I'm always available to help and that they can do whatever we do on their own.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I always find something in each subject that a student could be interested in and show them that the subject can be exciting.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I always take each student's learning styles and alter my teaching style to fit what they need to successfully understand what we are going over. Even if it's just explaining something in a different way.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student's confidence is built by showing them that they have knowledge in that subject. Anything from playing a subject based game or trivia, to small rewards for progress made.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by playing small review games, working through different teaching/learning styles, and small knowledge checks.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I always adapt to each student's needs by fitting my lessons to their specific learning plan, whatever style they may learn in or if they need a hands-on lesson.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My material varies from student to student, but I'll use anything from counters to whiteboards, paper, books, games, worksheets, kitchen utensils, or anything I can get my hands on that will help a student better understand a subject.
