What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning should be fun, and I strive to include creative ways that students can learn and retain new material. I incorporate a song, rhyme, dance and visual ways to motivate a student to learn new things. All students can learn when academic goals are set and techniques are explained. I look forward to tutoring you.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I provide an assessment to identify any problem areas, and I provide an educational service plan in order to reach desired goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I help a student become an independent learner by showing him/her techniques that will allow them to solve and complete difficult problems on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help a student stay motivated by making learning fun and using visuals, songs, rhymes, and dance.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I let the student know that it is going to be okay, and I explain ways that the student can learn the material better.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

A huge part of reading comprehension is knowing the meanings of words. Struggling readers are encouraged to read often in order to build a sufficient vocabulary and to know and understand what they are reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

As I am working with a new student, I identify the learning objectives, design age-appropriate learning activities, and develop strategies to help the student learn the material.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I create visuals, songs, rhymes, and dance in order to encourage a student to learn a difficult subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use flash cards, read sight words in a text, and I use manipulatives as techniques to help a student learn new material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I encourage independence, which builds self-esteem and confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I conduct literacy assessments, record data, and then use the recorded data to monitor the student's progress, plan, and goals.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I encourage the student to set their own goals, and this motivates them to participate in the learning process.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I work with students on their problem areas, and I provide study strategies to improve this area by supplying flashcards, books, and manipulatives.
