What is your teaching philosophy?
It is important that you understand in your own unique way. Teaching is not a "one size fit all" practice. Let's figure out your way!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
The first session is about spending time getting to know the student's personality, accomplishments, and struggles. Where is the student excelling and why? Is that particular teacher instructing him or her in a unique way? Let's figure this out and apply it to our study sessions!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
It is essential to spend time with the student to help the student become an independent thinker, asking open-ended yet leading questions that will stick with the student when the next complex set of problems come along.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Students need cheerleaders. That is what I am. They deserve an advocate that is solely there to help the student become a better them. When you have someone cheering you on, it definitely makes those successes more exciting. Along with the student's parents/guardians, a student with a team behind them strives for achieving success.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Everyone does not learn in the same time frame. Patience is key, and I would teach the student in the way that is best suited for him or her with patience and diligence.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension is a skill that only will get better with practice. We will utilize different reading tools and practices on a consistent basis. Consistency and intensity is key with reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Strategies: Positive Thinking- We are in this together! Patience- No frustration, we take breaks when we need to take breaks, we work on other parts, and we come back to the difficult ones. Consistency and Repetition Works Wonders- read, review, example, review, and repeat.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
It varies with the subject. The best way to get a student excited is to relate the subject to something they love or understand! For example, writing a business plan. The student loves skateboarding. Write a business plan about a skateboarding company! This is exciting and starts dialogue.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Exercises and mini quizzes throughout have been the best tool for understanding.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
You relate the subject to a topic that the student is familiar with and reassure the student with positive thinking and compliments when they do improve and you receive correct answers to questions.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
This will be based on conversations with the student, parents, and a previous work in this subject.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I base my tutoring on how the students learn the best and most effectively.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use outlines, current events, and exercises.
