What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Flashcards, text problems, study guides, and diagrams.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I evaluate where the student stands in the subject, what they need to accomplish for the course, and make a plan with a goal.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Build the toolkit of the student by developing study skills and good habits.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Develop short and long-term goals the student wishes to accomplish in the subject.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break the subject down to the most basic level and relate the concepts to ones the student already knows in order for the student to make connections with the material.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the student's current habits, their goals, their struggles, and their skills in relation to the subject, and then applying what the student already knows to learning the concepts.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Approach the subject from a goal-oriented point of view and help the student to make connections with things they already know.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Discussing the material and answering questions without assistance insures the student fully understands the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By rewarding the progress of the student and encouraging them to answer, even if they are unsure.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

When discussing or reviewing the material, I see if the student struggles with certain concepts or seems to be lost.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

The student may learn better by visual or aural learning, by copying examples or by working through the problem themselves. If the student prefers learning through a certain style, the material will be presented that way.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learning is a long process, but it can be made easier through repetition and fun approaches.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By going slow and breaking down the reading into chunks with specific questions aimed at assessing the student's understanding of the reading.
