My teaching philosophy revolves around the idea that we learn better when we are comfortable making mistakes. They are, after all, how we learn. The learning process requires patience on behalf of the student and the teacher, so that each can determine the learning style most comfortable for success.

In a typical first session, I will get to know you. I would love to know what you do for fun, to relax, and how you prefer to communicate with me. Of course, I am flexible. If you're uncomfortable talking about your personal life, that is okay, too!

In my experience, becoming an independent learner is made easier when we are explained the "why's" of a concept and not just the "how's." As we learn, we build a figurative toolbox from which to pull from in the future.

I understand that it's hard to stay motivated academically, at times. I can help you through this by providing real-life scenarios when what you're learning will be applicable, and also inserting a sense of humor from time to time. No matter the subject, there are always multiple learning pathways. If you are more comfortable outside, that's okay with me! We can "color outside the lines" if needed.

Often the only variable getting in the way of our learning is the method we are using to learn it, or the way it is being taught to us. If you are having difficulty with a subject, I will do my best to approach it in a way that makes sense to you. I have a lot of patience!

I would encourage you to try the following: 1) Re-read the text. 2) Discuss with me the parts that are unclear. 3) Draw a picture as it relates to the text- in your mind or on paper. 4) Summarize what you've read at regular intervals, not just when you've finished reading. 5) Reading more slowly can help!

I will know you truly understand the material when you can teach me. I may even have questions for you that you'll be able to figure out using the tools you've developed.

Confidence is so important to the learning process. Often, even if the final answer is incorrect, there are concepts along the way that a student has processed correctly. We can capitalize on these and give positive feedback about what was done right.

Most often, I can evaluate a student's needs simply through having a conversation with them. If that doesn't prove effective, we will find another way that suits us!

Depending on the subject, I may use the following tools during a tutoring session: photographs, voice recordings, rulers and other math paraphernalia, newspapers, games, music, and role play.

I am very flexible. If your needs are not being met, I will adjust my teaching style.

When I start to work with a student I like to talk to them about how they want to learn. Understanding a student's personality can be a large part of this, so I do my best to get to know you.
