What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Icebreakers! I would want to get to know the student and find out what the student's goals are for the session. And then we can talk about how we can work together to achieve those goals!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can motivate a student to develop stronger study skills and critical-thinking skills to help him or her become an independent learner.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would make sure the student understands the significance of the material and connect the material to something relevant to his or her life.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would create multiple creative ways to reinforce the skill or concept so that, if a student has a particular learning style, I can create a method of learning the skill or concept with that learning style.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I ask them questions! We start with simple recall and inference skills, and if a student can master those, we move up to extending and applying questions. I would also have the student use the book to help summarize the story.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
-
Patience 2. Undivided attention and 3. Repetition.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would do my best to tie the subject and material to something relevant to the student's life so he or she can understand its significance.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have the student restate the material, or put everything in his or her own words. I would never solely ask "Do you understand?" because that does not show whether or not a student understands.
